Android testers wanted please

Almost finished an Android app and would like some feedback on what works and what doesn't, and especially comparisons between phones and tablets. I've tried to make it look and feel a little different to a bt boilerplate, hope it works... It's a free app so I'll post a link here: THANKS TO THE TESTERS! Link removed. Thanks in advance. PS, to avoid pop-up ads, click every other list menu item starting with the top item being ok ;)

Yeah, I think it was one of the first affordable droids to have high res display.

Ah, OK. Holds up very well side by side with 4s. Don't tell anyone I said that and would NEVER say it a public forum.

Dude!!!!! Very, very nice. Finish up so I can give it to my wife! This is one of the Android apps to which I will judge others. It looks VERY nice. The appearance is attractive without overpowering the content. The shopping list is especially nice. What's going to happen with 'Lentils' and 'Rice & Pasta' ? Are they more recipes? Shame there is a five item limit on tabs. Other than finding a way to center the box menus under the last menu (...) I think the app is coming along very well indeed. Tested on my Galaxy Tab II 7" tablet. Android v4.1.1 Cheers! -- Smug

Thanks Smug! Yeah, I'm adding in recipes as we speak! I was trying to add more tabs in a slider, but it'd require a complete rewrite which I'm not capable of. The box menus were purposely put on the left, everywhere else I've tried is a real pain to get right across devices. Thanks for the comments!

@Smug, sorry mate, just noticed you used a tablet. Did the layouts look ok? I'm using slightly different layouts for 7"+ tablets to try and make things look a bit better - font sizes, margins etc.

Things looked just fine! Except for the last menu (and you justified your reasons) I haven't found anything 'bad' yet. Cheers! -- Smug

That's great! What I was hoping to hear. There were a lot of big differences across screen sizes with a single layout folder.

I imagine. Android code isn't any worse than iOS, IMHO; it's the layout across so many devices. Cheers! -- Smug

I find the code hard to follow, but it gets a bit easier each time.. I found some documentation in the android docs about using different layout folders - so for 7" and above, I copied the xml files I wanted to modify from the "layout" folder into a folder named "layout-sw600dp". The device just picks the right folder to take the layout from. There are a number of different folders that can be added, from small to xlarge screen.

Great looking and working app. I've tested it on my LG Optimus L9 and the only issue I noticed was the timer image. It was cut off on the right side a little but everything else was right on target and lined up correctly! Good luck with adding the rest!

Thanks guys, issues noted. @aussiedra - did you see the ps in my op! @dudave - the menu is the menu with image plugin with the two xml files modified. @Worker73 - I think that might be a bt glitch.. or I've changed some java file too much. I'll check the onStop events, thanks. @mysps - good spot! I'll try and fix the timer, I can see it myself now. Funny, never noticed it before.

Hi checked it out on both a nexus 7 and a small new galaxy phone (samsung galaxy young). Here are the screenshots from the first: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/27773514/ForShare/raveyd/1.png https://dl.dropbox.com/u/27773514/ForShare/raveyd/2.png https://dl.dropbox.com/u/27773514/ForShare/raveyd/3.png https://dl.dropbox.com/u/27773514/ForShare/raveyd/4.png https://dl.dropbox.com/u/27773514/ForShare/raveyd/5.png It just looked as if the size of the top image in some of the screens was not right, or it wasn't scaling correctly like the others. You can see it in the screenshots. Keep rockin!

Thanks WebNevees! Very much appreciated. Looks like i'm still going to be messing around with layouts for a while. Even 1.png doesn't look as it should - way too much top margin and list text floating near the top. What has gone wrong is building layouts for 7"+ but only able to test on 10". I need to find a cheap 7" tablet...

Hi! Tested in Jiayu G3 with android 4.1.2 and all looked like the pics from @WebNevees (screen resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels). One time one of the recipe failed to load the correspondent html file, but can't tell which recipe was because when I tried to find it later all recipes loaded fine. Regards, Carlos

Thanks @CJOMapps! Funny, I'm using a 1280x720 htc device but it's nowhere near 7" and I don't see those problems! Mine's 4.1.1 though... Jeez, do even android versions so close to each other make a difference too?!?!?! I guess the recipe loading was a temporary glitch. The recipes & images are hosted in the app, so it wouldn't be a connection issue or anything.
