Android Development Environment Super Simplified!

@LA and I discovered this yesterday, and then @David emailed me the same day! Looks like Android has super simplified the process of setting up your Android development environment: http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/bundle.html Just download the zip file, unzip and launch! I'll be updating my tutorial to reflect this, and will be putting together a video as well. Mark

I did try that but didnt work, but I found the problem. Start your computer in safe mode with networking, open Eclipse, install ADT Plugin...Took me 2 minutes to install. Something in Windows 7 is stopping it but this works! LA

@LA : I got it working on Windows 7 with zero problems. The issues with your installation, I think, is that you can't already have Eclipse or the Android SDK already installed. It has to be a "clean" system. We were trying to update your current SDK install, so that was the issue. Mark

@GoNorthWest, Yeah, I deleted everything and installed the bundle this morning. I spent all day trying to load that plugin and it would not download or even get past the dependencies calculation so I did what I wrote above and it installed within minutes then I went over to sdk location and it was there.

It's so simple it's CRAZY! Literally unzip, double-click the Eclipse.exe file, and you're off and running. The only extra thing I had to do was download the Google APIs, and I'd probably have to define an emulator if one wasn't already. But the whole thing is ridiculously simple! Android FINALLY got something right! Mark

Hi all. I'm brand new here, am a graphic designer and no coder, so will probably be your worst nightmare. With that said, I tried installing the ADT Bundle for Mac 10.5.8. but always get the error "dyld: unknown required load command 0x80000022" Any thoughts? P.S. You'll have to talk to me like I'm like 5 yrs. old. Thanks in advance for any help...

Hi @Stickup Artist, Welcome to buzztouch! So, I Googled your error, and I believe you have the wrong version of Eclipse installed for your Mac. I suspect you are running a 32-bit version of Mac OS Leopard, and you might have installed a 64-bit version of Eclipse. Or, it might be the other way around! So, going as basic as possible, can you give me the name of the file you downloaded from either the Eclipse website or the Android website so we can see what version it is? Also, can you let me know whether you are running 32-bit or 64-bit Mac OS X? You can get that from hitting the Apple logo on the menu and selecting About this Mac. Feel free to email me at MrkFleming at google.com for assistance as well! Mark

Thanks Mark! I believe I have the 64-bit Mac OS X because it's an Intel Core 2 Duo. The version of Eclipse that comes in the bundle is 64-bit, right? However, before I found the bundle, I did install a 32-bit version of Eclipse the way it was shown on Buzztouch's "Things you will need" video. I manually pulled into the trash what I could find that these 2 install attempts put on my computer. Anyway, I just tried to install the bundle again and no joy, same error... Thank you in advance for any further insights. Greatly appreciated!

Ah man! I'm all about the joy, so let's figure this thing out... Give this document a read and see if it helps things out a bit. I wrote it before they came out with the integrated ADT bundle, but the steps are still valid if you download Eclipse and the Android SDK separately. https://www.buzztouch.com/files/howtos/buzztouch_For_Android-A_Users_Guide.pdf Personally, I like the ADT bundle better, and I suspect installation is the same for Mac as it is for Linux and Windows. Here's a video I did showing how to install it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFGF3_r9YIA Give this stuff a read and a try, and let me know what happens. I'm also assuming that you are logged in as a user with Administrative rights, and not some locked down user that can't do anything? We'll figure this out...hang in there! Mark

Hi Mark. Like I said before, your worst nightmare... Do I need to install the Java JDK? The version on my Mac is: java version "1.5.0_20" Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_20-b02-315) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_20-141, mixed mode, sharing) Thanks!

Not a nightmare at all. But expect me to use your graphic design knowledge someday! ;-) I don't believe you should have to install a different version of Java than what you have. I didn't have to on my Mac mini running Snow Leopard. I thought this was odd, because it says you need the JDK, but what I have works just fine. So, I don't think you need to worry about it. Mark

Thank you! I will definitely be there to help you with graphic design. Getting closer! In my user folder I put a file called Android Development. In that folder is the adt-bundle-mac folder. And in that folder are the folders eclipse and sdk. After I define the workspace I get: Could not find the SDK folder '/Users/myname/Desktop/adt-bundle-mac/sdk/' I understand why that path isn't working, but not how to fix it. Then I am asked to Open Preferences or Close.

I meant to say a folder called Android Development, not a file.

Excellent! Getting much closer. At least Eclipse isn't crashing now! Check out Page 14 of the doc I referenced above...it shows you exactly how to solve that problem! Heading to bed in a few, but will be available in the morning to continue on if you run into problems! Mark

To be continued... I am to the point of setting up the emulator but have no Google APIs in the drop down menu. I went back to the SDK Manager and can’t find any. Any ideas? Thanks for hanging in there with me!

Sweet...making progress! You should be able to download the Google APIs from the SDK Manager. If you're not seeing any options for that, make sure the "Show : Updates/New" box is checked. Then select the base Android SDK and Google API for the version of Android you are interested in. As long as you have Google API 8 or newer, you're golden. See Page 15 of the document I referenced above. Mark

Yes, thanks to your hand holding! I followed the reference on Page 15 last night and again this morning. "Show : Updates/New" box is checked and my window looks exactly like the one in the documentation except no Google APIs are in there. Below is a link to a screenshot of my SDK Manager: https://picasaweb.google.com/StickupArtist01/SDKManagerScreenshot#5816669627488594050 Thank you!
