Can I test 4-inch apps on iPad or iPad mini

So I've seen the iPad mini, and I think it's ultra-cool! I love it, especially for that price tag. But I do want a 4-inch device for my app development. Now I'm in a bit of a dilemma, because I either get the new iPod Touch, or the iPad mini. But one advantage with the iPad mini, is that I'll be able to test iPad apps on it. But will I be able to test 4-inch apps on it. So would I be able to scale it up to that screen size, like boosting up an iPhone app to fit iPad, but it's pixelated.

No, I'd imagine it would go to the previous size (iPhone 4s size).

I don't have an iPad but I have played with one. If you make an app that is iPad compatible (when you specify in xcode), it goes full size on an iPad. But, I believe if you make it iPhone only, it will come out iPhone sized on an iPad, or big and pixellated if you use the x2 option. I think this behaviour works in the xcode simulator. If it was me, I would buy an iPad and a second hand iPod touch on eBay - Job Done! Alan

I have an iPod Touch already, but I want a 4-inch device. I won't be able to find a 4-inch iPod Touch on eBay tough. It's too new.

I suppose if it is important to see how apps would look 'in the flesh' on the new size device, it probably rules out using the ipad.

But if the iPad mini can simulate an app designed for the 4-inch screen, then that would be great. And that's all I'm asking. Whether I could simulate a 4-inch app on an iPad screen?

@Annadale As I said in my previous post, I believe it simulates the 3.5-ish / old iPhone screen.

Sorry, I didn't quite grasp the nub of question at first. I don't know the actual answer, but the ipad mini is non-retina and the new ipod touch is retina. Imho, whatever the iPad can simulate in the way of a 4" display, I would be asking myself if it is as good as the 'real thing'.

Ok. Thanks. To be honest, I did have that feeling, because the original iPhone screen ratio fits better than the 16:9 ratio, with the iPad.
