how to get data out from external xls file?

I try to make my first app (and I'm not a programmer) so any help is appreciated. I run a small business and now I keep track of my invoices and incomes with the help of a Numbers table (but I can export in xls if needed). I would like to be able to get data from my file and based on that data to get reports and graphical representation of that data. Is this possible? I have to make and link my app to a database? I also have my own working server (running on OSX server) if this helps... What is not clear for me is how can I make my app to interact with this file or database. How should I start? Thanks in advance, Claudiu

I'm pretty new at this but I can give some advice how I would try to do it. There may be a better way. There's an excel plugin already made. I haven't worked with it yet but it says you can use a URL from your excel database and it will show up on a screen of your choosing. If you want graphs to show up, I would also make a file, use an html plugin, load a URL with this file with your graphs. I think if you make changes to your file, the data should change in your app. These may be some starting points, maybe someone will have better advice.

Yes, right but this is just a way to read informations from this external file. I want also to write and edit the file, like a database... For example when I make my list of clients, I would like to interact with Address Book. When I make a new invoice to a client, I would like to interact with Calendar native app and eventually set some alerts... But for the mathematical computations I think I will need something tabellar like xls... Can somebody please tell me what I search for? What tools, plugins or code should I use? Thanks, Claudiu

Maybe Filemaker is the solution?
