Xcode compiling on PC

Hi, During the summer I tried to build an app to bundle info about my local sports club. I've had some success and some epic fails (like not owning an android phone capable of running the bloomin thing once I got it working!) Overall it's not great but functional though it has some features I never envisaged I could do - so thanks to everyone at BT and those who have helped on the forum. The problem now is that I've been asked by quite a few people wanting an Iphone version.I've seen odd threads about it maybe being possible to get xcode on your PC but no definitive instructions. So it is possible? and is their a link giving step by step instructions how to do it (preferably written for a layman!) There is no intention to publish the app through itunes so don't have any issues with the problems many seem to have in that respect. I just emailed the .APK file to those who wanted it - presumably I could do the same for an iphone version. Whilst it's been very interesting & fun (scattered with a fair amount of head scratching and plenty of frustration!) This app is probably the only one I will make as essentially I had a reason to create an app & I just can't envisage another reason for creating one, so I'm certainly not going to invest in a Mac just so I can replicate this app for Iphone. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance ROB

Hello. The best way to use x code is on an Intel chipped mac computer. But you probably know that already. I found this online but I have not tried it. Good Luck http://www.ehow.com/how_8699136_xcode-pc.html

I believe it is possible but is againt Xcode TOS. In order to run on iphone i also believe you need to have a developer account with them otherwise it is only possible to run in simulator but sure if you only want it for a few people then someone on here may be able to compile it for you and send you the package. not 100% certain but sure someone in the know will correct me if im wrong

Yep, @MrStuck is correct. It is against the Xcode TOS. It can be done, but you also can't just email out the app like you do with Android. If you don't go through iTunes, then users have to jailbreak their phone in order to install the app. Probably not a good request for a business to make of their customers! The alternative is to find somebody to compile it for you. You will also need to pay the $99/yr Apple Developer Program fee for each year you want to keep your app available. That provides the signing certificates Apple requires. Mark

@GoNorthWest do you know if apple can tell if it has been compiled on a pc? If not then would it not be ok to do it this way. I tried the directions given above by @Calypso Kid but they don't work. If its possible to get away with it (even if only just to practice using xcode) then it would be worth looking into for me as i would love to get used to using it and running simulator to see what apps would look like on iphone. Thanks

I'm willing to bet that Apple can tell if it's been compiled on a PC or not. Each device out there comes with a unique identifier...PCs are no exception. I suspect that info is stored somewhere. I guess the real question is whether they care or not, and what they might do if they do care. I don't doubt that there are probably a ton of apps out there compiled on a PC. Of course, when you agree to the TOS when you install Xcode, you are agreeing to using it on an Apple branded device only. So, there may be an ethical question as well. This is one of those big grey areas. Part of me thinks that it would be OK to do it just for practice, but not real submission. Part of me says you've gotta follow the TOS the letter. And part of me says the heck with Apple, they're way too restrictive and controlling. Mark

I was planning to purchase a mac after xmas but would really like to try it out to get used to it. This would mean when i do get a mac i could just go ahead and get the $99 licence and get submitting straight away. Perhaps you know of a good guide that works so i can set up or maybe someone else knows of one. Thanks

That actually sounds like a good plan. I've never done it, or even tried it, so I can't vouch for any particular tutorial. I think there are many out there. There are even some virtual images you can download and run in VMware that have everything already configured...just Google it! Mark

I've made a Hackintosh before. But after all the work, and the problems with drivers, and finding the right PC hardware that will run OSX properly, I finally figured out it was cheaper (and a lot easier) to get a cheapo macbook or mac mini second hand. (just bought a macbook the other day for $100, it can be done)

Just to confirm. Can i only use an Intel based mac to develop or will xcode run in all macs?

Yes, it must be an Intel based Mac. More specifically, (as I stated in last night's webinar), the newest version of Xcode requires OSX 10.7 (Lion), which has more strict requirements on the mac computer. Must be a Core2Duo Intel or i-Series Must have 2GB Ram Must have 7GB free hard drive. and generally speaking, must be a 2008 or newer machine. If you are unsure, you can use Wikipedia to tell you which models support Lion. Or use the iPhone App "MacTracker" for easy on-the-go research. (Or phone a friend - me)

Hi @ATRAIN, Interesting stuff! I have to say that I'm super tempted to try and create a hackintosh. My mini won't support Mountain Lion, so I'm stuck with only being able to compile for iOS 5, which is a bummer. And Apple products are so incredibly, and unnecessarily, expensive, that my hopes are of getting anything new are pretty slim! Now I have to grapple with the TOS thing! Mark

Well that's all a bit disappointing. I'm certainly not going to pay Apple just to publish to a handful of people even it is was a one off fee let alone a yearly one.
