Passbook and coupons

Hey, having an app that wants to give out cupons via the app, how would that work? 1.Does it have to be vi passbook? 2.How would the "giving out coupons" actually work? Sending a remote notifications? Would love some opinions on how to make an this kind of app, it would be an app for a cafee shop. Thank you. Miguel

Many ways to do that. Easy and difficult ones ;-) This might be usefull regarding Passbook: http://www.passsource.com You can send the coupons per email, have them on a special screen or send push notifications. Working on passbook myself right now, before that I used a html document that looked pretty good and had a QR Code on it. The good thing is, you can change these coupons in the html documents on remote.

Hey, thanks for your reply. This kind of app is still on in my system, so so rules I still dont understand. I understand that you can have coupons sent by email, but what I'd like is to have an app, where you have a bunch of menus, and then have like a clint menu, where you can store your coupons or loyalty card. If I send the coupon by email how does it get into the app? Im guessing it doesn't, right? How did you do it in your apps? Thanks Miguel

The coupon can be a html doc inside your menu. Should work for your needs or not?

Yes it might work. But lets image the a client has the app. At one point there might not be any coupons, so what will be the html when I click in that screen? But from what I understand the passbook, works outside an app, right? Thanks. Miguel

If there are no coupons, the html screen will tell you exactly that? Stay tuned for more coupons blabla... You can send the people a push notification as soon as a new coupons is ready! Yes, passbook is an app of its own but the coupons can start from your app.

Ok, I see how the html could work. Thanks. You mean I can have the coupon in the app and then it opens in passbook, right? It could be an URL doc that would download the coupon? Thanks. Miguel

I've was playing with Passbook a little and reading some tutorials. IMO the passbook is sort of a weak Apple attempt to seal BT Technology... Look at how the files are constructed. it's ALL JSON. But with the developer portal signing hassle. LOL.... I really like it tho and want to use it - but HATE that it's all IOS technology. Is there an Android equivelent? Leon - brilliant idea to use a URL/HTML doc to display the 'pass'. I'm thinking here, make a png of the IOS pass, store it on a server and reference the image! instant generic "Passbook" for Android... Of course it won't work for all passes, esp the ones that keep tallies. But for a basic type pass that doesn't have any data attached to it...

I believe Passbook is a must have and can be serious business for developers! It looks like Android will take the same boat: http://www.idownloadblog.com/2012/09/24/that-didnt-take-long-passbook-for-android-lands/ Go Passbook :-)

I started looking more seriously into passbook this week. Here is a good starting point for the basics: http://www.raywenderlich.com/20734/beginning-passbook-part-1 There are already several online creators tools: http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/ios-passbook-apps/ which will save time.

also I was going to mention that passbook really reminds me of the BT architecture. Dynamic JSON. If David ever looks into it, I wonder what he'd say....

I started looking into passbook yesterday and I did not test them really. I only made a couple of samples with passource because I didn't have much time. It's on the list after upgrading a couple of my applications to the new BT (design mode + push notifications).

Wow. That was pretty fascinationg stuff. Thanks for pointing it out, glad I watched it. Love those GUI passbuilder sites. Passtools.com looked awesome but the pricing is a bit steep $49 a month. The freebie plan with passes "expiring" every 30 days is weak. Now to figure out how/where we can integrate that into BT to take advantage of it... Loved the Costanza reference too, spot on!

Seinfeld is relevant 15 years later.... amazing. Ya that was a pretty solid explanation and timely since I started looking into this whole Passbook thing on Tuesday. Try these: http://mashable.com/2012/10/16/passbook-apps/ I think PassSource.com is "more free". $89 a year and grandfathered! I have an app for San Diego State University and I'm going to try to work with businesses and generate passes for around campus. The location feature should be pretty cool the students. Good luck, Ryan
