Self hosted : What happens if I change my domain name ?

Hi guys n girls, I've installed BT server on a domain name that I'd like to change. example : www.mydomain1.com/bt I'd like to change it to www.mydomain2.com/bt. I don't want to keep the first domain name because some other business's have the same name and I don't want any lawyer knocking on my door (and my apps not working after). The problem is I installed my self-hosting database on www.mydomain1.com Looking at the apps config data, they are all pointing to this domaine name. Is there a simple way to change to www.domain2.com/bt without having to remake the apps ? Thanks a lot, Paddy

you might be able to do a http redirect if you still own the old domain. One thing I was thinking about recently was using a dynamic DNS server for dataURLs when self hosting for this very reason. It wouldn't help you now, since you're already published. But something for everyone to think about for the future.

Hi Stobe, Thanks for that. I thought about redirect, but if my old domain name is dead or taken over, I could not control that. For the moment no apps are published with the old domain name. They are built but not yet published. Would that make a difference ?

If no apps are published, go into your MYSQL and simply update the app tables that include and reference the old domain name. I've done this before, and it only takes a few minutes to find and weed them out. If they WERE published, there would be no way around. I'm happy to Team Viewer to show you how it's done if you need help? Cheers, David https://buzztouchmods.com

MrDavid is right. MySQL is probably the quickest. But if you're not familiar with it maybe nit the easiest. You can always change the ConfigURL in the Core properties on each app. Just because they are originally pointing to your domain1 doesn't mean you can change those URLs to domain2 and click save.

Thanks Stobe, I saw a lot of unique IDs for screens, so I thought, oh jez, I have to copy all that too. Found search and replace in phpmyadmin. Funny, I put in mydomain1 and search all tables: bt_api_keys bt_api_requests bt_app_users bt_applications bt_config etc... and it finds nothing. Gonna get a beer or two, that will help.

yeah, any screens with childItems (maps, menus, photo galleries) have a dataURL. I tend to delete those or point them elsewhere, but that's my workflow. May not work for you.

Yup again no problem if you want to Team View with me (just send a PM). I can't remember on hand what exactly needs to be done in MYSQL. Cheers, David https://buzztouchmods.com

Thanks guys, I was thinking about creating another database, to replecate the 1st. Then I noticed that my hosting plan does not allow me to make another database (shared hosting with ovh.com). They ask me if I want to rent a private mysql server with 128 ram (smallest plan) at 6 euros/month to 40 euros/month for a 1 giga ram sql server. Over that, I'd go for dedicated hosting. Often shared hosting allows illimited databases but only 20-30 simultanoneous connections to a database. That's normally fine for a medium website or blog. I was thinking of this case. 1 - We have a succesfull app - yipee ! 2 - We have implemented push notifications on a self hosted plan. 3 - We send a push notification out to 10 000 app installs. 4 - Many open the app as soon as they receive the push, well over the 30 allowed connections to my db allowed, many simultanoneous calls to the apps config file. Would that be a problem ? With a sql server, it's illimited connections, are simultanoneous connections important ? I've been around here for a while, but I see, I'm still a first class noob. Cheers, Paddy PS. David, thanks for the offer, I'll install teamviewer tomorrow, 23h here now...whiskey time !
