iPhone App Woes

Hi, I created this free app for my church https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.clearviewchurch&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5jbGVhcnZpZXdjaHVyY2giXQ.. After 2 weeks I received this rejection from Apple? Rejected Sep 20, 2012 07:46 PM Reasons for Rejection: 10.6: Apple and our customers place a high value on simple, refined, creative, well thought through interfaces. They take more work but are worth it. Apple sets a high bar. If your user interface is complex or less than very good it may be rejected Sep 20, 2012 07:46 PM. From Apple. 10.6 We found the following issues with the user interface of your app: - Did not integrate with iOS features. For example, the events should integrate with the iOS Calendar and also include notifications. - Did not include iOS features. For example, it would be appropriate to use native iOS buttons and iOS features other than just linking to websites and web views. We noticed your app provides a poor user experience as features are not well implemented. Specifically, sole features of your app are displayed in a web view and it would be appropriate to implement native iOS features. These examples identify types of issues discovered in your app but may not represent all such issues. It would be appropriate to thoroughly evaluate your app to address these types of issues. So if possible, could someone please (someone who has successfully added an iPhone App to iTunes.. look at my Android App and give me easy to understand pointers in getting my Free App released on iTunes. Since we've paid the $99 Apple Developer fee we would like our iPhone App to be on iTunes. Does Apple flag Buzztouch Apps? Thank you in advance! Victor

Hi Victor, Apple can be super frustrating to be sure! I don't believe that they flag Buzztouch apps, as there are hundreds of them out there at this very moment. There are some super successful apps in iTunes that have been created using buzztouch. However, each reviewer does seem to be different. In looking at the screen shots for your Android version, I'm thinking the main objection from Apple would be that you seem to link a lot of screens to a website. Apple prefers that apps use native content...so, instead of linking to a website in what is basically a browser, create custom HTML content that resides in the app itself. Use their mapping stuff to provide driving directions. It would be cool if you could integrate into the calendar. It's often hard to nail down exactly what they want. All my apps (so far) have been approved on the first try. But others here have had so many rejections before they were finally approved I'd be surprised if they had any hair left! The quickest fix I could think of for your app would be to remove the dependency on just showing web page content from your site. Apple feels that a Web App is more appropriate for that than an iOS app. They place a premium on apps that utilize iOS features. Mark

Hi there. Apple doesn't flag BT apps, not at all. Literally 1000's of them in there and many making good green folding money. That said, many have also had the email above, don't get down, you'll get it in. Apple can be funny if they think the app just serves a small community as well, not always the case though. Without seeing screenshots of the Apple app it is hard to say but here are a few ideas that may or may not be in your app already. OK, you say an app for your Church, nice one, there are a few good biblical type apps from some BT users that do well. How about trying to implement a few of the following, bet it gets you in. 1. A user generated gallery. The Apps users can upload photos from Church events, fundraisers, bake sales etc. Apple love user interaction. 2. Push notifications. You can use a service like Parse (free for the most part) to keep your users updated about Church goings on, guest speakers, events and what not. 3. Scripture quiz. You can add in game center and have quizzes based on scriptures, events and so on, again, great interaction an the quizzes open up app to a larger community 4. GoNorthWest has a sweet note taking plugin that people could use in the app to make notes in church events, passages and so on. These are just a few ways to get around the above rejection. Post a screenshot of your homepage if you can. Others will chime in but stick with it! All the best Keith

Terrific ideas MacApple, I'm curious about the user generated gallery. I'm looking for a plugin where users can login via twitter or facebook and upload pics and a little text. (rather than image alone). Do you know if Buzztouch can do that?

OK. Have a look at Scringo SDK. That, with the image gallery plugin utilizing Flickr will take care of that. Easyily implemented. You can also use the image gallery (iOS only at moment) to add text/description to images.

Sounds like some neat feature ideas from @shenry for @MacApple's cool gallery plugin. We'll look for them in the morning! LOL. For Apple is difficult to understand sometimes. But, following the three golden rules usually means first time approval for the beloved App Store. 1) GORGEOUS: If it looks amatuer (to them, their opinion) it probably is. They place a very high value on graphics and design. 2) USEFUL: If it does something unique, something tough to offer in a website, it's a plus. If it doesn't do anything special, and could easily be re-labeled a "mobile website" it's a minus. A big minus. They are very serious about implementing native functionality. 3) PERFORMANCE: If it performs slowly, sluggishly, or otherwise "web like" they will almost always reject it. Screens that load slow, menu taps that hang, etc. Speed that baby up for some brownie points. "Flagging BT Apps": Apple doesn't care how you make your software. They care about the end result. You could write Objective C in Notepad, you could use a professional programmer, or you could do it yourself. As long as you compile it with their tools (Xcode and the iOS SDK) you're OK as far as that goes. Paying them $99 per year has zero to do with them "approving" your apps. They will not return your money if you can't create a high enough quality app (their opinion) to approved for the App Store. Draconian? Maybe. Successful? Obviously if you're Apple.
