Virgin Developer Hitting a Few Obstacles

Hi Everyone. I am building my first app in iOS on Xcode, I have a Mac Book Pro with 2.4 GHz running Version 10.6.8 with 4 Gig Memory running Snow Leopard. As this is not the latest Mac I can only install Xcode 3.2.6 which has Ios emulator 4.3 (89F192). I'm wondering if that's my problem? I compiled my app and went to view it in the emulator and The Custom URL Plugin would not redirect to the desired target (Just spins and says loading) The desired URL is http://www.dialaginos.net.au/dialaginos. The New Gallery Component does not show the picture (https://www.buzztouch.com/app/cp_v20/bt_app/bt_pickerFile.php?appGuid=JA1474DC64BE92B65392276A8&formEl=addImageName&fileNameOrURL=fileName&searchFolder=/images)which is loaded in the plugin The location function is not appearing in the menu in the emulator and the Top Navigation bar Bottom Toolbar settings are the same as the other plugins. Also this experience is making me worry about having any App I make be compatible across different versions of the iPhone. Is that a big problem or am I just getting worried about nothing?

Hi David, One issue you're going to hit, and the same problem I have on my Mac mini, is that you'll only be able to develop apps that support iOS 5.1 or older. Because you can only run Snow Leopard, which means you can't download the latest version of Xcode, you won't be able to compile your app to support iOS 6. I'm not sure if that means your app won't work at all or not on iOS 6...need an Apple expert to let us know that for sure. Mark

Guys, If i may use this post to get a bit more educated....can you not just upgrade to Lion? Being a PC man, i do not know much about how Apple products upgrade, but with a PC it is pretty easy and it looks as if @David_Mollet s machine would be fast enough and have enough memory to get the job done. a 2.4 Mhz processor is not a slow machine and 4 gigs of memory is a pretty good hunk. Thanks Al :-)

Hi Al, This is, in my opinion, where Apple really sucks and sticks it to the end consumer. My Mac mini is not upgradeable to Mountain Lion. Snow Leopard is that last thing that works on the machine. In order to move to Lion or Mountain Lion, I have to buy new hardware. Crazy thing is...my mini is, at the oldest, the 2007 version, so the hardware isn't all that old. Plenty of CPU power, plenty of memory, plenty of HD space. No reason it can't work other than Apple says they won't allow it. And, yep, I've tried it. Tried upgrading to both Lion and Mountain Lion. Neither is supported on my hardware. Totally bogus..again, in my opinion. Nothing like the more open PC model. Mark

Your app will work with iOS6, even if you don't intend to publish it to iOS6 directly.

Thanks for confirming that, @Annandale. That's what I figured...it should work, but can't take advantage of any new iOS 6 features. Makes sense, but you never know these days! Mark

Well, if you have a Map plugin in your app, the maps will be Apple Maps. I can confirm because I made an app recently and although when I tried to test it on my iOS6 device it failed (back in the days when iOS 6 was beta), it would not upload. However, when my app hit the App Store, it worked like a treat.

David, I have the older MBP, w/ 3GB ram, but I'm running 10.7.4 (Lion), and so far so good. With a Newer MBP, I suspect you'll be able to upgrade just fine. I'm upgrading XCode to 4.5 as I write this.

Guess it totally depends on the hardware. My Mac mini won't run Mountain Lion, which I have to say is a major, major disappointment. And I verified with Apple that they won't support anything beyond Xcode 4.2 for Snow Leopard. So...totally stuck unless I can sell enough plugins to buy a MBP!
