iPhone 5 Screenshots - Mandatory?

Hey guys, I just received the following email from Apple and you might have as well: If you are updating your app for iPhone 5 and iPod touch (5th generation), you must provide additional screenshots to support the new screen dimensions for the App Store. The new screenshot dimensions are: 640 x 1136 (portrait) 640 x 1096 (portrait) 1136 x 640 (landscape) 1136 x 600 (landscape) To deliver new screenshots, go to the Version Details page in the Manage Your Applications module on iTunes Connect. If you deliver a new app binary that takes advantage of the new screen size for iPhone 5 or iPod touch (5th generation) without screenshots in the new dimensions, the status of your app will change to Missing Screenshot. Your app will not be reviewed until you upload screenshots with the correct dimensions. You will also need to upload screenshots for any added localizations you have set up on iTunes Connect. For more information on screenshot requirements, see the Asset Specifications section in the iTunes Connect Developer Guide. Regards, The App Store team ----------------------------------------------------------------------- My question is twofold: 1) Are iPhone 5 screenshots mandatory? 2) If they are, what would be the best way to take them? Thanks again! Nicholas

1) not sure yet ;) maybe someone else knows? 2) I always take screenshots from the device themselves, and then email - but the question is: do you HAVE an iphone 5? otherwise, the simulator works just as good - preferences? :) David https://buzztouchmods.com

1) Million dollar question! ;) 2) Does the simulator support iPhone 5? I'll admit, I'm not using the most up to date version of Xcode. In fact, it's not even my mac, it's my significant other's that she lets me use seeing as she got herself a new mac ;) It runs on Snow Leopard and I believe I'm using Xcode 4.3? I'd have to take a look tomorrow, but either way, how would I incorporate an iPhone 5 device on the simulator... is there some kind of download that I should be aware of? Thanks for the quick response, David. ;) Nicholas

Won't the quality of the image suffer?

The email I received seemed to indicate it's only if you're updating the iPhone 5. Otherwise, don't worry about it! "If you deliver a new app binary that takes advantage of the new screen size for iPhone 5 or iPod touch (5th generation) without screenshots in the new dimensions, the status of your app will change to Missing Screenshot. Your app will not be reviewed until you upload screenshots with the correct dimensions."

Regarding the screenshots: If you're submitting a new binary that takes advantage of the new size (as Andy quoted above), then I would hope you had either a real device or a simulator to fully test the app. If so, then you have all the tools you need to take the screenshot.

My iPhone 5 delivers in the morning. I'm more than happy to provide screenshots for anyone who needs them. Just send me a Testflight invite! Andy

Just submitted an app and they needed iPhone 5 screenshots. I stretched one of the iPhone 4 shots just to get the process going. It looked a little warped but my app contains mostly menu line items. I wonder how closely the reviewers look at the screen shots when they are testing the functionality of the app. Ryan

If you need iPhone 5 screenshots, I'm happy to help. Hope you don't need it! :) Andy

It's simple! Build and Run your app on iOS Simulator (Using Xcode 4.5) - having selected iPhone (iOS 6). When your app is running on the simulator click "Hardware" from the top menu bar, then choose Device - iPhone (Retina 4 inch) [that's the iPhone 5] Choose File - Save Screenshot. That's it. You have an iPhone 5 screenshot

If you add additional screenshots to your app via iTunes connect AFTER it has been approved, does it get automatically updated? Thanks, Tish.
