Loading an image onto a menu button...

Hi! I have come across a problem, which i can see has cropped up before, and have tried everything suggested...I'm currently developing for IOS for iPhone and iPad and am using Xcode and buzz touch to develop my app. Now I'm basically a complete beginner, so in the last couple of days I started an app. I created a simple button menu and wanted to add images to every button but when I try, some show up on the simulator and some don't! I have dragged and dropped all images into xcode BT_Images as a properly converted .PNG, I have even made sure all images worked by testing them on the buttons that are working for me. I have even wiped everything and started again to no avail! This may or may not help but the first menu I added to the home button menu seemed to work fine, but the second and third didn't. The first Custom URL I added to my home button menu works fine, the second didn't. Does this have something to do with it? Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks

Hi @R1xon, Welcome to buzztouch! And let me congratulate you on a great forum post! The level of detail you have provided prevents a lot of questions that would have needed to be asked! That being said, it's not obvious what the issue is! It's strange that an image will work on a button, but then if you swap out the image for another one, on the same button, it stops working. That, however, leads me to believe the configuration data files are out of sync, or if you're using images already in Xcode, that perhaps you need to do a Product...Clean from the menu bar after each image change and before you build again. So, two things I would try: 1. Sync up you configuration data file after a change and before building again. A video on how to do that can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sp2vL1XCPC0 2. Try doing a Product...Clean before you build again and run on your device or the simulator. Give those a try and let me know if it helps. If not, we'll continue to to try and resolve! Mark

Hi Mark, Thanks for the prompt response! I do apologise, I may have been a little unclear on my last paragraph. What I meant was, the button I added an image to that worked, was another menu button. But it doesn't seem to be letting me add an image on my second menu button, or even third...I have multiple menu buttons that need to follow on from this home menu and not being able to add images on them doesn't make it look great! It may just be a coincidence that a pattern has emerged from this but thought I would mention it. That said, I have completed both steps advised, but with no luck. I'm not sure what else to say, it feels like I have tried everything... Thanks James

OK...so, what does it say in the Xcode console when you load the button menu screen? It should have statements with respect to whether it can find the image locally, has to download it, or can't find it at all. This is the debug console I'm talking about. This doc shows how to set that up: http://www.buzztouch.com/files/howtos/Problem_Reporting_and_Basic_Debug_v1.0.pdf Anything you can get from that would be super helpful. The most useful info will be right at the time you try to load or refresh the button menu screen. Mark

so... In the screens/actions page in buzz touch I am clicking on my home screen button menu. I am then clicking on a button I added under 'selecting this button…' another screen then pops up which is called 'button item properties' giving me options for button text, image name small device, image name large device etc. I type in the file name for example 'yellow.png' click save, to which it says 'saved' in green underneath. I refresh the simulator and it hasn't worked! Please note that the yellow.png file is saved in Xcode under BT_images. I then go back into the 'button item properties' to see if I spelt it wrong or made a mistake somewhere but the field is completely blank, as if I hadn't typed in it at all! There were quite a few output lines that came out on the Xcode target output but this one looked relevant to the problem...there were no debugging outputs mind you. 2012-09-12 23:58:21.518 myapplicationv0001[2917:c07] BT_button_view: Image for button exists in bundle - not downloading. Any ideas? Thanks James

Hi James, So, the message from the console you pasted above means that it found the image it needs on the local device (included with the app) so it doesn't need to download it from a URL. That's a good thing! There should be one of these messages for each button image that's part of the bundle. Why it's not saving the info to your control panel is an entirely different matter. One thing I would check is, after you save the filename, go to the Configuration Data link and search the output for the same filename. That's verification of whether it actually save it or not. If it says it saved it, and it's not there, then there may be a bug. Is this v2 or v1.5? buzztouch.com or self-hosted? Mark

Hi guys, interesting discussion here. After reading the comments, my first reaction was... "OK, something must be failing in the control panel. Saving some button properties, then re-visiting the screen and having them 'gone' seemed like an obvious problem." I was surprised to hear that it sounded like something was wrong with the menu buttons plugin, it hasn't been changed in long time and I have not heard any issues like this. But, anything can happen, so off I went to button land... I just created a new button menu in one of my apps using the buzztouch.com control panel. I added a few buttons, opened each buttons properties (by clicking the link under "selecting this button...") to see what may be happening. I made some changes, clicked "Save" and all seemed fine. I closed the button properties window, the re-opened it. I expected my selections / entries to be "gone" like @R1xon experienced. Nope, everything I entered saved and remained as it's designed. I then visited the app's configuration data screen (in the control panel) and verified that the choices I made in the button properties were finding their way to the config data. They are. This leads us back to the core issue - why are the selections that @R1xon is making not "saving" to the database? I'll assume this is the buzztouch.com control panel, and not a self hosted control panel? I'll also assume that no obvious erros or anything else is being displayed. I'm not sure what to think or which direction to looks. Something for sure is not right with @R1xon's app but I can't seem to track down what that could be. For sure this is a control panel / web app issue and not related to the app running in the device. If the selections are not saving, it won't work, as @R1xon expects. Any other details, clues, ideas about what to look for?
