Screen Limits and View Limits removed

Great news! The "screen" and "view" limitations have been removed from account control panels for all account types. This means you can create as many "screens per app" and you can have as many "views per app" as your audience requires regardless of your account type (free accounts included). Why did we do this? A few reasons... 1) Limits suck: We never wanted to impose any limitations like this in the first place. However, we feared that if we did not we would not be able to maintain a crazy fast, high performing, always available backend without losing our shirts (and subsequently going away, which would suck for everyone). The limitations were introduced in April '12 along with the then-new account upgrade options. We are happy to report that we've recently made some investments in the buzztouch.com backend, increased the available performance, and improved our capacity to support unlimited screens and views. This means we no longer need to limit any accounts in this regard. 2) Confusion: The simple fact is, the "screens" and "views" limitations were very confusing - for everyone. Removing them makes the buzztouch value proposition easier to understand. 3) Disingenuous: It's not reasonable for us and our supporters to say "you should make an app using buzztouch" to then learn later that you can "only make an app with x number of screens" or "only make an app that has x number of end users" unless you upgrade. It sorta goes against our nature. Our mission is simple, and always has been, we want "every app to start at buzztouch" (literally every app, anywhere, created by anyone). We constantly try to remove all reasons why someone may choose to NOT use buzztouch, this was one of those reasons. 4) Plugin Market: As the newly evolving plugin market becomes more relative (as it relates to the overall operation), it stands to reasons that we would not want to limit peoples ability to get creative, right? Limiting peoples ability to create new "screens" in their apps limits their creativity. Lame for everyone. 5) Because we can. One of the biggest rewards for us, the operators of this thing, is to get to make decisions like this. Fun ones. Imagine how cool it would be to magically upgrade your Netflix streaming limits, or your Mobile Phone's Data Plan. If you operated Netflix or AT&T or Verizon...you could. You don't, neither do we. The next best thing we could think of, that we could afford, is this. We did. We smiled. It's fun to offer more for less. We don't know if we'll get to the point where we can increase the number of apps allowed in your control panels, or the monthly limitations imposed on self hosted API keys while keeping account pricing the same. But, rest assured, if we can, we will. Make something cool tonight. David

Once again BuzzTouch comes on top. I only found BT around March 2012 and was impressed by it and with very little doubt decided this was the way to go. Its impressive how it has evolved since then. Everyday I'm happier and sure I made the right choice. Not to mention the great community we have, there is always some one wanting to help you solve your problems. Way to go BuzzTouch. Cheers to all.

Great news! Congratulations David for the way it seems BT is going: up and to the right ;) It's super healthy to think "users first" as you do as long as you technically can. Great spirit, I hope it will mean more subscriptions for you

@David I have always been amazed at the generosity of the buzztouch team and the buzztouch community. The sheer amount of free advice, support for "new" users, support for plugins developers etc etc, as well as grandfathering accounts, no limits on apps etc - it is simply awesome :) Go Buzztouch!

This is ace news. Do you plan to offer more apps in control panel in future? Once I hit the app limit (will take some time to exceed it though!) I would be EXTREMELY happy to pay more subscription per month to increase amount of apps.

haha yes this is good news but also slightly frustrating (for me personally) as this limitation was the sole reason I moved to self hosted! So effectively I have built a 1.4 app, then rebuilt a 1.5 app, then rebuilt a self hosted 2.0 app. with 300+ screens this was no small feat! Oh well all experience is valuable right!? :)

@Walms: Bummer. We suspect that you're not the only person that has done this? It's always a hard for us to know exactly why folks do what they do but this does make sense. If you're ONLY using the self hosted option because you have lots and lots of content, I'm happy to try to help guide you away from self hosted and back onto buzztouch.com control panel if you think that would be better long term. It would save you a few bucks at minimum, right? If you're interested in doing this, send me an email at david 'at' buzztouch.com with details about your app (explain it's purpose) and I'll help figure out a transition plan? Moving apps around is never fun but can be done with a little effort.

@David. do you plan to increase max apps allowed in control panel at any time (and I don't mean now). perhaps maybe 12 months or more from now with increase in monthly fees for bigger accounts?

@Mr stuck: Good question and of course hard to say. Short answer: We don't know if this will happen. Long answer: It's possible but very few people have the need while also wanting to NOT self host the control panel. The developer account already allows 50 apps, which is lots. In most cases, if somebody exceeds this limit, they are an operation of sorts. A busy firm or designer making apps. This is great and exactly the reason for the Self Hosted option, some places need more power, flexibility, control, etc. Having an account hosted on the buzztouch.com site, that allowed more than 50 apps could be done, it's a matter of balancing the interests of the people that need this and the benefit / or lack of, of having us host them vs hosting themselves.

I agree. 50 apps is loads and I don't see myself exceeding this anytime in the near future. just thought I would put the question out there as you just never know. as you so rightly put it "Limits Suck" who knows, I may never hit the 50 app limit (and probably won't), perhaps just the fact its there gives a psychological sense of restriction but as you so rightly point out, self hosted options mean there are no restrictions at all. in fact the only limit is your imagination. I'm sure if the time comes there will plenty of help available to make the transition to self hosted. anyhow like I said I was simply asking the question.

okay question - let's say I start out small with one app, and add more as I go along. After not too long, I'm up to needing a developer account and before you know it, I have more than 50 apps created and need to switch to a self-hosted plan. How hard is migration? Here's my concern - at 50 apps, lots of people have them in their hands, and a switch to self-hosted would require a "hard" update to each app, rather than the "soft" ones that are done whenever an app is opened. But it's improbable to expect everyone to update their apps via app stores on day one of the migration. So, would their apps stop working until they upgrade? Would they work and never do a soft update until the hard update is done? Or would some other phenomenon happen, like little green aliens taking over their device screens?

Little green aliens. Sounds like it would go like this...we'll use 50 as the number. --50 apps in your buzztouch control panel. All compiled, all running on countless devices. --You setup a self hosted server. You migrate all the data to this new server. --You release an update. At this point, like you say, some of the apps will be "current" and some will still need the update. In many cases you will never get all of the users to update. --The 50 apps in your buzztouch control panel never go away. The little aliens don't magically make them disappear when you start making things on your new server. This means they will continue to work. It also means that customers with your "old" version will not get the "new things" you do on the update you release.

Hey David, any plans on changing how you view screens in the menu? Would love for there to be a way where you only see screens that are underneath a menu/submenu to only be seen there instead of having every screen show on your main screen. Thanks :)

Thanks guys, seen the group by type but doesn't really help when you've got a lot of the same type of screens but on different levels or in different submenus.

I think 3 apps max is just right. Why would a person want more then 3 apps..I mean just keep one open and rename and go from there..no need to delete an app just revise the app but I'm a newbie, just think 3 apps for free is very generous...

depends as you can make money making apps for other people. but 3 personal apps is probably ok. however once you get the buzztouch bug you will want more.
