Config File

Hey, I was thinking about all this online vs offline apps, and updating via control panel and all that. I dont know if this makes any sense in terms of possibilities (not a programer), but could it be possible for one to, lets say, have an app in App Store, its an online app. I want to make changes in the app. I would like to use my control panel, I change stuff in a bunch of screens, and each time I press save, if someone opens the app, they get a new update available pop up. So if someone is using the app a lot during the time I'm updating, even if it small updates, each time I press save, if the app is then reopened, the user is prompt again. Now my question, and forgive if its nonsense for advanced users, is it possible to have the control panel write the changes on a temp config file and only at the end, if I want I'd have an option "copy to config file" or something, and only then would the changes be written in the config file that the app checks. This way there would be only one update prompt for the user. Cheers, and happy Thursday.

There is a post about using dropbox to upload yourconfig.txt. The app will call for the dropboxes location not the control panel, you can tweak til your heart is content then and when you are happy you can upload it and replace the drop box version. If you have already submitted though I think you will have to upload another binary. Hope that makes sense, bit awkward typing a post on my phone.

Hey, Thanks. I already do as you sugest, but that doesn't stop the user from bring promotor for an update, even though no update will accour if the config file is remote. I wanted to make all changes and then have one final save. Like on a word doc, you type and when you finish you click save, you don't click save for ever word... Does it make sense? Cheers

Hey MadRod, I think if you remove the reportToURL, it will stop having the app constantly check for updates. Each time you make a change in the control panel, it time stamps a file, and that file is what gets checked each time the app is opened or brought to the foreground. I don't think that users are prompted each time you hit the save button, but only in the cases I just mentioned. So, if you delete that URL, and have your configuration data file (BT_Config.txt) file located on DropBox or something, then users wouldn't be prompted for an update, but each time they open the app, it would check the dataURL link and grab the latest file. When you're done with updates, just make sure the server and DropBox copies of the file are synced. I think that should work! Mark
