PC or Mac

Just wondering if I need to use a Mac for ISO apps or can I use my PC?

Normally you'll need and Intel Mac, but it's possible with a PC. FRED

I vote for Mac because you'd have no problems developing with the Android on it as well. I could be a bias apple fan as well. On the PC you could use Vmware or similiar to install the apple ios on the virtual drive. good luck!

If you want to risk upsetting the legal team at Apple by violating the Xcode Terms of Service and not use Apple branded hardware...well, you've been warned! It's certainly possible, but not recommended. Here's a doc that describes what you need for both Android and iOS. http://www.buzztouch.com/files/howtos/Things_You_Need_Before_You_Start_Developing_Apps_v1.0.pdf Mark

Welcome to BT! Buy a Mac. A second hand Mac Mini (Intel proc) will set you back a few hundred earth dollars or go for the Intel Core 2 Duo on eBay. You can get 2009 model with 4gb ram for around $350. Drop on an I stall of VMWare Fusion and dual boot a Win install and you'll have the best of both worlds. Try and avoid other solutions that don't involve a physical Mac, may well be more hassle than it's worth in the end. Once again, welcome to BT, people like @GoNorthWest, @Raveyd, @MGoBlue @ATrain and many others whose names escape me right now are well worth a follow, you'll get some killer insights into the inner workings of BT and will not lead you astray. Now go buy a Mac!

Also it would be a pain to get ios onto VMWare. Because I believe ios looks for specific hardware components that are only available in macs. Good luck! I know they're expensive but it's worth it :)

@MacApple @theMonster -- I've never tried but I wanted to mention because its up to the user to decide based on the available options! Macs are totally worth it in the long run.

Use to be a massive PC fan, still am sort of; then I joined the Buzztouch community as I wanted to develop apps, realised very quickly that I needed a Mac to build iOS apps. Then I started using the Mac and loved it, never crashes unlike my PC, super quick, can handle multiple applications being open and generally a wonderful experience. Now I only use my PC to read my emails and write post in Buzztouch. lol! Get a Mac, Mac Mini is a good buy, although you will need to buy a monitor, mouse and keyboard, still works out cheaper.

Hi @Techtopia, It'll have to be a newer Mac mini. I have one from 2007, I think, and it won't support Mountain Lion, which is needed to run the latest version of Xcode. Apparently Apple is so arrogant that they feel you should have to upgrade your hardware in order to use the latest software...maybe that's why the OS is so cheap compared to Windows! Best bet might be to post something on the Apple developer forums to get a definitive answer...I suspect all our responses might be guesses. I do know, definitively, that mine won't support Mountain Lion, so I'm kinda hosed with respect to iOS 6. Mark

All you need is a mac with an intel processor, anything later then 2005, should be good (that's when apple made the transition). Now, the current Xcode does require Lion (or Mountain Lion), however you can still get Xcode 3 off of the developer website (a previous version of Xcode).

Keep in mind, though, that if you don't use the current version of Xcode, you won't get the current iOS SDK. In my case, Xcode 4.2 is the last version that my Mac mini supports. So, that means I'm stuck at Snow Leopard for an OS, and Xcode 4.2. Which means the most I can ever compile for on my Mac mini is iOS 5.1. I verified this directly with Apple. I'll never be able to run the iOS 6 SDK on my mini. Total bummer. Mark
