Android 1.5 header image- suggestions

First of all, I know 1.5 is becoming obsolete, so my next version will be in 2.0. Now the problem: I created an iPhone app months ago, with all of the bells and whistles that Android can't utilize: image uploader, etc. Therefore, I am creating a simple version of the app for the Android/Google Play market since I have read over and over that many of the features I have in the iPhone app will not work on Android. I do want to keep the header images the same on both apps, but all of my header image sizes are set to the iPhone dimensions...much smaller than the emulator. What are your recommendations? 1) Do I have to "code" in Android to scale the header images? If so, what exactly do I need to type into Eclipse? 2) Do I have to resize all of my header images? If so, what dimensions should I use? (I have a lot of different header images...this is not a fun option). Oh, and all of my header images use a web address in Flickr to show images. 3) Is there a much more simple way than recreating the app altogether???

Me too! I thought I might start keeping a list of what is working in which versions.

Not sure of the answer, but either compile a .apk and post and we'll all provide feedback to answer the question, or send me a link to the source code (Android) and I'll compile. Fred

Hi @Alfrea, This guide walks you step-by-step through the process, with illustrations to show you how it all works: http://www.buzztouch.com/files/howtos/buzztouch_For_Android-A_Users_Guide.pdf You can create an apk with a debug release key and then either post it somewhere like DropBox so we can grab it, or email it to people and they can install it that way. Create the .apk and post it on Dropbox. Grab a public link and post the link here on the Forum. A share link is not a public link. Fred

@ALFREA just sent you a PM. @Susan - I posted this before and also sent this to Alfrea: http://coding.smashingmagazine.com/2011/06/30/designing-for-android/ Well worth the read if you're turning iOS into Android. Great references there at the end for Image sizes and more Android goodness. I'm way more into designing and developing on platform after reading that.

I agree with Fred. You can post a link of your app and many of android developers would like to have a look at your app and offer support. BTW you can also post the link of your app on app store so that we might get some idea about your app.

Thanks everyone for your support. I'm working on the apk and "debug release key," and I will post with the dropbox link by tomorrow afternoon. @ATRAIN thanks for the link and message. This is my iPhone app: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/brides-xv-rio-grande-valley/id516459587?mt=8 It has the image uploader and image gallery using Flickr (center button).

The screenshots of your app suggest that your app is really awesome. Cant wait to see this app live on android market.

Android is almost complete! :) I think I compiled the .apk correctly. Will a few of you please test the .apk please? Also, I'd greatly appreciate if you can send me two screenshots of the app: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13027672/buzzTouch200.apk%20copy *** Fingers crossed.

Just downloaded the app but could not be installed till i changed the extention name of that app to .apk. I found that the homescreen shows perfectly (See first link for screenshot) but when i clicked the vendors link i found that there was an error in displaying the contents of that screen. Look second link for screenshot. When i clicked the live it icon (this was not so easy since i had to tap many times to make that screen open) the app crashes with a forceclose error. The announce button too did not work despite tapping the icon for many times and the screen did not open at all. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/61663890/20120818152534.png https://dl.dropbox.com/u/61663890/20120818152652.png

Based on the second screenshot above you're probably using screens that don't work in BTv1.5 (Android). Suggest you read my BTv1.5 (Android) Guide, find it at www.MySkylla.com Screen & Plugins. Fred

The second screen is a website with a photo gallery: http://www.bridesandxv.com/get-inspired. The website works on our Android test device, so I do not know why it's not working with the .apk. I'm going to copy and paste the config file, and test on another Android device (my sister's phone). I'll update the apk, as well.

Just checked your app again. Now the first screen and the second screen work perfectly. However the third screen does not open yet even after repeatedly tapping the icon. I have attached following image links of both first and second screens. First button screen: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/61663890/20120818231853.png Menu list after the button screen: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/61663890/20120818231911.png Second button screen: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/61663890/20120818231741.png Image gallery screen: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/61663890/20120818231808.png

Thanks, Sandeep! :). The third button is invisible/hidden. It's there somewhere, but it is not aligned on all Android phones. Should I just completely redo the home screen to have non-transparent buttons? Hmmmm...maybe I can add a lower toolbar. Do Android apps use lower toolbars? Ive never attempted those toolbars. Although, I've seen them on other apps. Any suggestions will help.

By toolbar do you mean tabs? If so the answer is yes, you can add a tab bar in android apps. Just need to set up tabs by going to Manage Layouts---> Tabbed Layout---> and set properties there. The buttons really look nice on the homescreen and the background is clear (transperent) but if making the button background non-transparent helps in fixing the problem of the screens then you should try this. BTW i found that there is no splash screen in your app. Adding a splash screen would be really nice (just my suggestion).

If your BTv1.5 (Android) don't use the Splash Screen because it has a bug. Fred

I took a break, but I am back at it. :). One question: do I need to keep updating the .apk, or does it sync live?

If you have added local files or if you have made any code changes in your project file using eclipse, then the apk needs to be signed and exported again. In other case, it is not necessary.

Anything you add to Eclipse requires a new binary (.apk). Fred
