Database question

I want to build a app were you fill in a form and it creates a database on the device like a logbook would be then be able to filter this information along with other functions but first I do not know how to build the form and database. I have looked in the forums but there have been little on answers to this. I just need a starting point. thanks

Hi @msnider, Welcome to buzztouch! Unfortunately, nobody has cracked that nut yet. A number of people have wondered about how to create and access a local database, but nobody has done it successfully yet. There have been some attempts at using localStorage and HTML5, and that works fine for some small stuff, but nobody has developed a working model of a logbook like you are asking for. If somebody has, I wish they'd point me to the app and prove me wrong. In any event, this is something I have been meaning to work on, but have lacked the time. Maybe I'll try and refocus. You could do some research on localStorage. Here's a good link to start: http://www.html5rocks.com/en/tutorials/webdatabase/todo/ Mark

Hi msnider, Currently I have seen that much can be done using jQuery Mobile. See if this tutorial can help you to realize your project: http://the-jquerymobile-tutorial.org/jquery-mobile-tutorial-CH22.php Good luck

Nice! That looks like a very promising link! I've been playing with this localStorage stuff on iOS, but the Javascript appears to be problematic. This article might help me over the hump! Mark

A good reference is my localStorage article found on my site. I have successfully used localStorage but have not published an app. Lots of info in that article. Fred www.MySkylla.com

Hey Fred, This localStorage stuff really interests me, as I think it would help evolve the things we can do with buzztouch. I know, from checking it out, that you have it working on your website. I've also seen some localStorage To-do list and Notepad examples on the web, and they always work perfectly with a normal browser, or even a mobile browser. I'm wondering, though, if you've gotten it to work in a webView in an app (Android or iOS, doesn't matter). I've not had much success, and I've been trying using a local HTML file. If you've been able to get it to work in an actual app (published or not), I would love to get some tips! Mark

WebView yes, been busy, working on other stuff so I haven't embedded. Planned to do that in May, how time flies. Put just about everything I know in my article. Fred

Cool, Fred...thanks. I'll dig deeper into your article, and I look forward to a live app in the near future. Totally understand the delay...I've got about a dozen apps I wanted released by now! :-) Mark

I played with this tutorial and had it almost functional. Something I do plan to play with again soon. http://www.techotopia.com/index.php/An_Example_SQLite_based_iOS_4_iPhone_Application This is the next one I'm planning to try out as well: http://www.chupamobile.com/products/details/478/GVPlistPersistence+-+Plist+Databases/ What I realized after a couple of days playing with the first tutorial is that I'd have to write a front end to access the same database on Android. Cross Platform compatibility is why the WEB succeeds. WEB based databases with web based front ends are natively cross platform compatible. Design it once and it'll last for years. I can see where DB in iOS works for some applications - but designing 2 front ends to access/edit the information seems inefficient and i wonder if this is part of why it's not used more that i'd think they are?

Hi folk, I've been an application and web developer for some 10 years, but I'm a total newbie about iPhone dev... I wanted to start with it, and was very happy to find buzztouch. I'm very interested into this localStorage and WebDB stuff, as I could use it for my apps. I couldn't find any other thread concerning this matter (out of https://www.buzztouch.com/forum/thread.php?tid=64FFE0F61B3870851C65612&currentPage=1). Is there any development since 2012 ? TIA
