maps in eclipse emulator

Hi all, So I made my first basic app to test the waters, I ran it through the emulator, and maps doesn't work, it just shows a blank screen with the pindrop and the address, but no actual map and it says my device is not sharing its location. Is this normal or is there something I can do to fix it?

I have just recently learned how to do this. It isn't hard, but it is a bit convoluted (in my mind anyway). The thing to look for is obtaining and adding an api key for googlemaps. Add the debug key in the right place and it works. Release is a bit harder. Freds guide will help with that, there is also a more recent one too by GoNorthwest. Alan

There are also tutorial videos on Youtube if you're more of a video person.

@AlanMac is correct. You'll not go wrong with @GoNorthWest tutorials, right here on BT. Always a good starting point my friend before you enter other murky waters.

Hi all, so I can't seem to generate an MD5 fingerprint to obtain the Google Maps certificate. I followed all the steps in the Android user's Guide, created my keystore, created the apk file, but then I get to the part where it says to enter in the command line to generate the fingerprint, so i enter: keytool -list -alias etc.. hit enter, and then it just says "keytool is not recognized as an internal or external command". Should I be putting in the info of the debug.keystore or the keystore I created?

There's an awesome keytool plugin for Eclipse that makes this so much easier. @Fred and others brought it to my attention, and I whipped up a video tutorial on it. You can find it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaXE2FUENFI Let me know if this helps, or if you still have specific questions! Mark

Ok i got the md5 fingerprint for the release certificate. Now im confused as to how to get the md5 for debug keystore... using the keytool, do I create a new keystore again and just name it debug.keystore or something? or am I supposed to use the debug that is generated when I build the app? In the latter case, how would I use the keytool to generate the md5?

ok nevermind. So I got my Map Key for the Release and the Debug. I pasted it into the string file where it says, and now the app won't run at all, says that it stopped unexpectedly

It shouldn't stop unexpectedly for anything to do with maps. Is there anything in LogCat? Mark

Alright. So I've got my map key for debug AND the release. I input them into the appropriate spots in the string file. I save and run the app and maps is still blank. I am so confused right now hahah, not sure what is going wrong, I followed Fred's instructions and only input the release key, and I even followed the Android User's Guide and input the release and the debug keys, neither seem to work. The Android Manifest debuggable is set to "false", could that be the issue? I tried setting it to "true" but it doesn't seem to help.

In my experience, the map tiles only show up if you create an apk with a release key and use the for testing. I have a video tutorial on YouTube that shows how to install an apk into the Emulator...search the forums for Quick Clips. This should get you going! Mark

Thank you Mark & Fred, don't know what I (or tons of others on here) would do without you! I'll let you know how it goes. Khalid
