How easy/hard is it change servers when you are self hosting.

I'm looking at self-hosting and building several apps for clients of mine. I want to know how difficult it would be if I decide to change servers, how hard it is to migrate from one to another as to limit disruption of service as best as possible.

A problem you'll face is that some apps use data URLs that work on the new server.

I'll assume you have some technical background? a) One server is up and running on serverOne.com b) One server is up and running on serverTwo.com serverOne.com has some apps connecting to it for data. So far so good. After you get your new server running (a few strategies for copying database, files, etc) dont' make any changes to the old server. Test test test and make sure the new server is running as expected. Change the DNS settings on with your domain registrar so requests beging going to the new server. At this point, both servers are the same so either one can handle the requests from phones. Give it a week or so to make sure all the DNS servers on earth have migrated your new settings. Kill the old server.
