Post a public link, not a share link, and you'll get a few more testers. Fred

Tested on a Android 2.2.1 device Was unable to play any of the videos even with WiFi. Tried using my Acer 7" tablet 4.0.1 using WiFi and all the videos played except for the first one and the Ross Move drill. App looks good. What media player are you using? Noticed you haven't allowed install to SD Card. Google Maps doesn't qualify to remain on my phone because it doesn't allow install to SD Card. Fred

Hi Ross, Ran this on my HTC HD2 running Gingerbread. Looks nice! No cell service...just WiFi. Didn't have a single issue. To appease @Fred and allow install to SD card, here's how to alter your AndroidManifest.xml file: * Near line 5, after the line that starts android:versionName, add the following line : android:installLocation="preferExternal" * Near line 14, in the list headed by <!-- required device permissions -->, add the following line (if it's not already there): <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" /> That'll do it! And I agree with Fred...I make sure all my Android apps do the prefer external. Internal memory is at a premium, and the external SD cards generally have more space. It's the best way to go (and gives the user a choice). Mark

I attempted to test on an Android 2.3.3 LG phone over 3g and wiFi but all I get is Starting media stream and then another box pops saying Cannot Play Video. I have no issues playing other videos in apps.

gbakakos - Can you do me a big favor and Clear Data and Force quit... restart and only try WiFi please? I found with this plugin, that once one video fails (like what might have happened to you with your first try with 3G), that any subsequent tries to play video also fail until app is reset. FYI... the plugin I'm using is A/V Simple (Plugin Author: David Book & Ianjamespiano). This would also tell us that the app/plugin with 2.3.3 does function when there is enough bandwidth and that 3G was the only issue. They might want to know, so if one video fails due to low bandwidth, that the player could be reset (with code) so subsequent tries will function... hope this makes sense... thanks, Ross

You guys are all awesome for helping so much!! Did you actually have a successful play using 3G with MobPlayer? That would mean the problem may be the mediaplayer that is coming along with the A/V Simple plugin

No videos playing on 3g or wifi on HTC wildfire running 2.2. (force closed and cleared data). Get the same message as @gbakakos. Do you know if the videos are set to be played on mobile? It's an option the uploader can choose on yt. I ask because on @fred's tablet (not considered 'mobile' by yt) the videos play ok. If you could post a yt link to a video it would be easy to check. *Edit* if in fact they are from youtube! just assumed they were..

I'm sorry I don't know what yt is. I thought another reason might be the videos are .m4v because the plugin listed that as a viable format. Here is a link to one. I encoded at a low quality so 3G could load it. http://rossidea.com/video/resistontakeaway/resistontakeawayLow.m4v .m4v is an apple extension for .mp4 I can just change the extensions. The weird part is I have no issues on my Verizon Droid with the A/V Simple plugin using WiFi... thanks for your help

sorry, yt = youtube. I assumed you were using youtube vids, my bad. I think m4v/mp4 might require extra a/v codecs - which mobplayer et al include in their packages, hence they play ok. A trip to stackoverflow.com would probably provide some advice on best file formats to use with Android. I find 3gp to be a pretty reliable format.

First thanks to all of you! I've learned a lot. I know nothing about Android (total Mac/iPhone) Is it common practice on Android apps to have to use a 3rd party video player each time you want to view a video? Can I assume everyone will have one and just setup my videos to open 3rd party app and let them choose each time?

Has anyone played a video ok with the Android native player? @gbakakos is using Mobplayer, I use MX Player, but there's no guarantee that any of your users will be using 3rd party players.

I am redesigning the app to make it mandatory to have a 3rd party video player on the users device. There are many Free players they can download. I may lose some sales, but not have the headaches once someone does purchase. It also gets by the issue with the A/V Simple plugin "Can't play this video" failing due to low bandwidth (when given enough time, the video would load) and not being able to recover without a complete force quit. May ask again for help testing if I haven't overstayed my welcome... thanks again...Ross

I have a new version that calls to the Browser, that calls to a 3rd party video player of the users choosing. I found MoboPlayer to function great with no advertising (Free) and will suggest it in my description when warning the user they'll need a player. If anyone wants to try this version here is the link: ... if you have already tested my app previously, please clear your browser cookies as to not conflict causing a false-fail... thanks again. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/93369234/com.golfdrills.BT_activity_root.apk

Re-tested. 3G - 1. video played but it asked if I wanted Mobplayer or default as you wanted. Sound only ran for 10 secs or so 2. tried a few others same thing then I Tried WiFi - When I selected a video it went to a browser screen and then right back to your main list screen Then tried 3G again and it flashed browser and back to list screen nothing would play. Rebooted phone. Still nothing would play in 3G or Wifi. always just flashed to a browser screen and back to your list menu. Android is just not in the same boat as IOS yet....

Thanks for the help. The key is to clear the cookies in the browser when that happens... I did that once and all have played fine since... but again I'm on WiFi... thank you

Update.. I just tried Wifi again. Now its working fine. Dam Android. I will try 3G again. will post back. 3G is sometimes loading but always audio works only for a few seconds. video is laggy and stutters. even the WiFi takes awhile to load but plays well. I use Moboplayer. the default Android Movies player just says it cant play it.

I have these videos at a very low rez... they're only 3mb. I know that 3G does not mean any kind of fixed bandwidth. If someone is on 3G with only 1-2 bars they get 2/5X bandwidth (kind of). I've read that 5 bars 3G is only about 700k so 1-2 bars is like dial up bandwidth... then, I think the low bandwidth causes these players to fail and then they need to be reset or cleared to work again. I'm about ready to forget the android market for video... Or wait until everyone has 4G at least... thanks again all!!

If you keep the videos with the app will that just make it to big for phone use. maybe its just a tablet app then.

Yes too large and too long a download. Would fill the tablet because, then the user expects higher quality to fill the screen (bigger files). I've been selling iPhone apps that all stream no problem. I'm not giving up. I might find someone else that has gone through this with Android. Or maybe, just sell it as WiFi or 4G ONLY... hummmm... thanks again, you've been a big help with this... :)
