trouble with maps on android

I am trying to get maps to work on Android. I've had no problem with ios, but on my Android app, all I get is a pale grey grid background. To get to this point I have been through GoNorthWest's guide, June 2012 (great guide btw). I have done everything there twice. Because I can't find the debug.keystore I've gone straight to the release build and installed directly onto my device, which ought to work. I see a logcat error "Couldn't get connection factory client", which to me suggests a problem with the google maps release key but I can't see why that would be. Also, In my manifest, debuggable is set to false, so I shouldn't need debug keys (should I?). I am using buzztouch hosted, v1.5 app and Android API 8. Any ideas?

You might want to try debug keys, all options before giving up here. I don't work much with android, hopefully someone will help soon. Cheers, David buzztouchmods.com

Hi @AlanMac, There's a chapter in here about Android issues and how to resolve them: http://www.buzztouch.com/resources/buzztouch_For_Android-A_Users_Guide.pdf In case you've already done it, here's what you need to do: * Using your Android release key (which you may still have to create), follow the steps in the doc to get your Google Maps API key (release version). * Plug that API key into your strings.xml file per instructions * Modify the \res\layout\ screen_map.xml file per instructions (basically replace Debug with Release) * Compile your app using your Android release key * Install the apk into your device or emulator Using anything other than the release keys and installing via the apk doesn't seem to work...at least in my experience. Feel free to contact me directly at MrkFleming at gmail dot com if you need further help! Mark

All sorted now - many thanks Mark for your help, your excellent howto and for going the extra mile to send me the detail on what I needed to know. I went back to basics, started over again, found my (hidden) debug key but I couldn't get the release to work properly. I had missed a step. Sometimes I can stare at the problem and just not see.
