idea of a beta testing platform

Hi guys, I was thinking about how developers sometime struggle to find devices to test new apps. Would it be a good idea to start some sort of organised platform where a pool of willing beta testers would offer their (free) services? For example, I own an iPhone 4S running OS6. I would sign up with these specs and anyone wishing to have their app tested would contact me. It's OK to ask family and friends to test but fellow developers would know what to look for and flag any issues. There are a few testing platforms our there (testflightapp.com, contussupport.com) but it feels like a logical feature to add to Buzztouch, doesn't it? There is nothing more annoying than finding out about an issue after the app release... What do you think? Farcat

If anyone needs a test usually that's where the post goes into. I have both IPhone and Android, so if you need any testing, just let me know. LA

I'm in for iOS testing... I can provide several UDIDs: a Touch, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, 4S & 5 and a gen 1 iPad!

For iOS I'm testing with v5.1.1 (my 1G iPad) and v6.0.1 (my wife's old iPhone 3GS). In Android, I lack. I have my Galaxy Tab II (Jellybean) and Santa got my wife a Samsung Nexus, which is also on Jellybean, but that's it. I'm snooping around for a 2.2 and a 2.3 device to test on those platforms, especially 2.3, since it's fairly prominent. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Android_historical_version_distribution.png In the meantime, like LA, I keep a watch in the "iOS/Android" beta forum if I have time to lend a hand... Let me (us) know what I (we) can do to help! If anyone can break it, I can. ;) Cheers! -- Smug

Ha! Yeah, @LA, but I have to hijack my wife and daughter's phones for an evening to do it! ;-)

@LA - That's what I do with the 3GS since I upgraded. It's actually quite nice. I put it in "Airplane Mode" and then turn on WiFi, so it's a nice cheap non-Retina iPhone test platform. It's also on the latest iOS too. I also use Vonage, so with the Vonage "Extensions" app for iPhone I can still make calls from it when I'm on Wifi with no extra charges!

Thanks for the replies, looks like I found myself some beta testing buddies!! :) At the moment I would need an app tested that is already on the Apple app store (free). A user told me that it wouldn't launch on ipad but I don't know which generation of iPad or OS he was using. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gibraltar-frontier/id585569705?mt=8 @Kozmoweb, would you mind please testing on your 1G iPad? It has been already tested on 3G. Any testers available with iPad 2G and 4G? Thanks, Farid

Hi Farid, I had no problems with the app on my first generation iPad running iOs 5.1.1. Everything seems to have loaded fine and I was able to see the videos and read the information pages. It's nighttime there now, so I couldn't see much, but cool none the less! One note however: The app does not seem to be formatted for landscape orientation, only portrait. Some of the content does not fit the screen correctly when in landscape. The Twitter feed page is an example of this and the Spain video page as well. You can lock the orientation to portrait in the Xcode project settings or rework those pages to ensure they fit on both orientations. I hope this feedback helps! Best, William

Hi William, Thanks for the quick testing, this is great feedback. Well spotted, the Landscape issue will be son sorted on the next release. I have just found out how to lock to portrait on iPad (this forum is just the best!). @LA, I need to get an iPad too. It was on my Christmas wish list but I guess I haven't been nice enough... Anyone with iPad 2G or 4G?

Just to inform i have a galaxy s2 and I flashed it with a custom Rom only a few weeks after getting it. Its super easy to do this and takes just a min to flash. Once done you can switch to different roms right from the phone. You should be able to find all different versions of android to test on one device. All the best

Thanks @Mr Stuck, great info. For those wondering what custom Rom (Read Only Memory) is, here is a good article: http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/05/01/custom-roms-for-android-explained-and-why-you-want-them/ Happy testing! Farcat

Sorry I didn't keep up as much as I should have. Nice app! I tested it on my 1st Gen iPad. But you heard that news already... it works just fine, like Kozomo said. Cheers! -- Smug
