Query about offline apps and self hosting

Hi. I am trying to build an app that will have over 300 screens (basically a compile of a lot of word documents - loaded into the program and not through a URL). Once it is done I would not need to modify it further and would envisage it being an "offline app" (assuming I understand this term correctly). I would obviously need to upgrade to the self-host option and my question is this: Once my app is completed would I still have to pay the monthly fee for people to use it? If it is self-hosted and not requiring further modification, why would it require an ongoing cost? Not trying to be stingy, but the app I'm designing is intended to be free (it's for education purposes) and I cannot afford the ongoing cost of $30 per month. I looked on the FAQs and browsed the other forum topics but I still don't completely understand. If I make this app, self host and then stop paying the monthly fee, will people stop being able to use the app or will I just not be able to modify it (until I renew the upgrade)? Sorry if I sound particularly stupid. I'm new and don't have much of a background in this stuff.

If its completely "offline", then once its published, it doesn't matter what platform it was created on (self-hosted, etc). If the majority of your screens are truly word docs coming from a list menu, then you might want to take a look at my List Menu Tool, which allows you to create a ton of screens, without them counting against your screen count. You can read more about it here: http://idevdepot.com/list-menu-tool/ And please feel free to ask me any questions about it.

Online or Offline is not the question. Question is will you need to download the Source Code. You can use Stobe's tool and keep your screen count under the 100 screen limit. How many view, if greater than Buzztouch's limit you move the online Config file to Dropbox. Use self-hosting to have easy access to all 42 plugins. (Actually it can be done using non-self-hosting but you have to learn how to play with the Config file.) But to answer your question, you don't have to pay the monthly to continue using the app. Fred

Hi, To keep it simple, @Fred and @Stobe both offer some great advice and tips. @Stobe says to create those screens and avoid the buzztouch.com limit, to use his tools on idevdepot.com @Fred says to avoid the view limit, to move your app config file to dropbox.com and in the future, if you ever want to go for self hosting (to get additional plugins not found on buzztouch.com) you can check out buzztouchmods.com These solutions should all be right up your alley. Cheers, David. buzztouchmods.com

Hey Guys. Happy Thursday (or whatever today is wherever you may be) I have been looking for this same info. Just to clarify on bioninja's question... i too am designing an educational and free app. in the best case scenario, millions of people will use it (probably not, i know, but just for the questions sake). will the app continue to work after i self host then cancel the account? i do appreciate this is a business and it is an awesome service being provided. but i will not be able to pay the $30/month when not making money on an educational free app... thanks for the info, much appreciated. Chris

The app will continue to work, but to add new features requires a API key if you need to download the source code. Fred
