Google Map showing grey grid and red exclamation ONLY

I have gone through the other forum topics and completely worked through the following http://myskylla.wordpress.com/2012/04/18/buzztouch-google-maps/ I am still getting a grey grid and the Red Exclamation and nothing else. Warm regards, Ron

By red exclamation I'm assuming you mean the map point! Until you sign your app with a release key and install it on a device or the emulator that way, all you'll see is that. It simply doesn't work with the debug key (I could be wrong, but I've never been able to get it to do so). Mark

Okay, well that is not what I wanted to hear. I got the debug key for sure, however, I thought there was a thread where a user got it to work. That would certainly be helpful because I have spent a lot of time just trying to get a map to display. When I try to go to get directions, it says 'Your device does not appear to be reporting it's location?' Thanks again for response Ron

Hi Ron, Well, blame it on Google! It's sorta their restriction. If you create an apk and sign it with your release key, you can send that apk to yourself and give it a test on your device. Or, you can install it in your emulator as well. With regards to your second question, in the Core Properties section of your control panel, there is an option to enable/disable GPS. You need to set it there. Finally...know that directions won't work on the Emulator because it doesn't have an actual GPS. Mark

It is really complicated, but if you follow Mark's instructions to the letter it really works. I need to go back to them every time.

Are you testing it on the device or the emulator? The maps don't work on the emulator, this could be your problem. Otherwise just follow marks and feds instructions.

The maps will work on the emulator if you sign with the release key. GPS won't work on the emulator at all. Mark

How do you sign with a release key instead of a debug key? With the original maps setup, I have both as signatures, the map works on emulator, but not on any other device. This is getting very frustrating now.

I just put the same key in both parts that worked for me. Some people are saying that it hasn't but it works every time for me.

Ok, others claim that the emulators work with the maps. But never for me. Test it on your phone. What you want to do in eclipse is. 1) File > Export > then fill in the prompts and save the .apk to your desktop (or somewhere where you can get it from). Then email, blu-tooth, (or anything like that) to your phone. 2) Once on you phone go to Settings > Applications > then tick 'Unknown Sources'. 3) Now you should be able to install the .apk on your phone. Navigate to where you saved the .apk and send it to your phone, then install it. 4) Test the maps on that and see if that grid disappears and you should see the maps. **Please note this is ruffly what i did, it might be slightly different depending on your phone or system (3.2 or 4.0 ect.)**

I have done this before, so I know I can do it. However, now I am having problems with my latest app. When I first started the project several weeks ago, I got a MD5 key and a map release key. Then, I tried to as @jawdoss suggested, and created an apk file, emailed it to myself, and launched it from my Android device. No luck. So I pulled out @GoNorthwest's instructions again, and created a new MD5 and got a new map release key. Still no luck. Any suggestions I what I should try? Did I do something I shouldn't have when I created a second MD5 key for the app? Does the MD5 key need to be in the same folder as the apk file? I am running out of ideas and hope someone has one for me. Thank you!

Hi Susan, Did you create your apk with your release key? It doesn't seem to work if you use the debug key. Mark

I used the release key for it. But I must be doing something wrong like that--some obvious thing that I am missing. In the past, I struggled with getting the MD5 key out of the app, but I figured that part out now!

Not a dumb question at all! Here's one method to install an apk into your emulator: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ohlah9xTv0 It's a video I whipped up with instructions. Mark

I am currently having the same problem. I believe I did everything correctly, watch the videos and read the step by step tutorials and still nothing. To my knowledge I got the API KEY and fingerprint correctly and placed them where they should go. I created a final version and installed it on my phone. With all this I still get the grey grid on the emulator and my test phone. Please any further suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thank you very much, Howard
