When to Re-download Source Code

When is re-downloading my app's source code "necessary" and when is it recommended? Said another way, after what activities/changes/modifications to my app do I have to re-download my source code and after which ones should I do it even if not required (for performance, etc.)? And a related question: If I download my source code again after already opening the project originally within Xcode, what are the steps I need to follow in order to use the new source code? Anything in the steps that I should watch out for or will need to redo in order to keep changes previously made within Xcode that I want to keep? (Hope that makes sense).

Here are a couple reason when... If you change your app icon, and want BT to do all the work of resizing the icon to the correct formats, that would be one reason. (but you could always use a free app icon tool from the mac app store and manually copy them) If you want to change the name of the app, which BT assigns as the app delegate name, then you could do it manually in xCode, or you could re-download a new source. To answer your second question: When you download the source again, you'd have to copy any files (docs, media, graphics, etc) into the new project. Also, any modifications you made to any source files (.m, .h) would have to be done again. And if you change the app name, if the com.appname.com name changes, the simulator will think its a new app. So I usually delete the old app from the sim before I run the new one.

When is re-downloading my app's source code "necessary" and when is it "recommended"? Good question, especially since you separated "necessary" and "recommended". Necessary - almost never. Recommended - Only as a last resort. When you begin modifying the Source Code to fix bugs and add features you'll not want to re-download the source code and over write that work. Changing the app name and icon can easily be done directly to the source code. Sometimes (few & far between) you may wish to re-download the source code just to grab a file which you then add to your project's source code. On occasion the changes I've made created errors I couldn't fix. Solution was to re-download the source code. But until you make major changes to the source code it's no big deal. But if you do it correctly you'll make those changes to your first app. Fred
