Put your Development FAQs (and answers) here

Hi, This post is a continuation of Javooooo's post about doing something for the BT community. I had suggested a Developers' FAQ and Javooooo and MacApple were talking about collaborating on it. I had gotten a bit of a start on one and I've sent what I had to Javooooo but I think it's also a good idea to get everyone else's input on questions that they see often in the forums (as in you see a new post asking it every week or so). I know BT has an FAQ section but that addresses questions about BT itself, not development. I also realize that there are sites like Fred's that are full of useful information and tutorials. But the FAQs I'm talking about are not ones that would require a multi-step tutorial. These are questions that can literally be answered in one or two sentences and that are quite often asked by people who are brand new to BT. I'll give you some examples; 1. How do I delete a screen in my app? View your app’s screens in list mode (as opposed to grid mode). You will see a delete option to the right of each screen. 2. How do I delete an app from my control panel? You cannot delete apps once they are created. You can recycle them, though, by deleting the apps contents and starting from scratch. (Feel free to suggest better/clearer answers to these two questions.) So, please post any really common questions you see and your answers in this thread. (Another one that comes to mind is about the default png screens in xCode.) I would suggest making the answers detailed but succinct. (Also note they might be edited.) I know from personal experience that when telling someone to click on something on a screen, it's useful to also say approximately on the screen where to find it. The questions/answers will be compiled in some kind of document and hopefully we can find a place to put it that's easily accessible to users. Thanks!

Good idea, but don't forget there's the very good but often forgotten BT wiki maintained by Mark at http://www.btugwiki.com. It's the ideal place to post short tutorials, tips and tricks.

Q: Where can I find BT tutorials, tips and tricks that I can use with my app? A: www.btugwiki.com, www.myskylla.com, etc. (Whatever other ones I'm missing.) (Not exactly an FAQ but one that could be included.)

Just a correction to your post, Ag-Chieve, it is not myskalla.com but myskylla.com

Oops. It's a good thing you caught that before Fred got to me.

btugwiki is really great for short tutorials. Myskylla is also awesome, especially for more advanced topics. Maybe you could create a site like theirs, for basic and advanced users and also point out other great sites.

It's a good idea to ask for FAQ's @Ag-Chieve, but as soon as this thread drops off the front page sometime tomorrow it's as good as dead unless you're subscribed, so I don't think there'll be much benefit in it. Personally, I think we should all make more use of the BT Wiki, it IS user editable after all and regular contributors to the forum all know the questions that come up time and time again. It might be the best place to start an FAQ?

Sounds like a great idea. I'm not terribly familiar with it. You wanna start something like that on the Wiki?

That's the problem Ag-Chieve, it's not terribly familiar to you, me or anyone, but it should be. Perhaps Mark (GoNorthWest) will see this and clarify what we can and cannot do regarding adding content to existing pages. If it's possible to add content to existing pages, what a great way to build a one stop FAQ.

I'm thinking the 'How To' section on this site could also host a developers' FAQ (Beginners FAQ, maybe?). It has link outs to most of the info that's available out there, including the Wiki and Fred's blog etc. If nobody else contributes by the time this thread takes the plunge off the end of 'newest topics' and dies in BT forum oblivion then I guess it just wasn't meant to be and we can all do our own contributions by continuing to tell people that they have to recycle apps etc.

Coupled with a sticky at the top of the forum, like the podcasts, it could eradicate many repeat posts. Then again, would BT want to do that? All these repeat questions, all worded differently, are great for serps and g indexing...

lol! Basically, appearing many times in google search results for many similar queries! *edit many similar, but different, queries eg how can i... how would i... how could i... etc etc Each one would bring up different search results in google, so by people constantly asking the same questions in different ways, BT would appear in many diffrent search results for essentially the same question.

Ha! I see all....good one! That would be awesome if the wiki got some interest. What you're discussing here is exactly what I envisioned when I set up that site...a place where people could put tips and tricks. It's fully editable by anyone who registers with the site. Please feel free to post info on that site, and let me know if you run into any issues! I think this thread is a great idea! Mark

ups.. edit! Whatever's going to happen, I feel like it's gonna be awesome with you guys working on it! The thing is, a FAQ like this can be useful, but I think it should be the priority of BT to use prevention ;) (a priority on support that is, not on what they should do first!) Yikes! The wiki is currently out of control with tons of spam postings. I'll clean that up this weekend. Thanks to @raveyd for pointing it out. Mark

Deleted the crazy spam entries on the wiki. Looks much better now. Feel free to use if you guys think it's appropriate! Mark
