Hosting requirements and providers

Happy Thursday all. We've dipped into this a few times but in light of the uptake of BT2.0 I reckoned it was time for a new thread about hosting providers and pro's and cons. Hosting is a strange beast these days with the continuing increase of virtual machines we've see over the last 3-4 years and while the landscape has changed it still pretty much comes down to uptime and support. You can pay from $5 a month for low end shared to $1000's for load balanced web and SQL clusters. Reckon most if us come in at around the $15 - $25 a month. So who do you all use? Do you like them? Ever had cause to use their support? Come across any limitations? Any other thoughts?

Hey, I use lunarpages. I mainly used it just to host emails for my clients. But have recently started to host some sites and BT_Server. It has SQL and works just fine. I've used their supports, die to my limit knowledge, and have gotten fast replies. I'm satisfied. Cheers.

Nice one @Raveyd Happy Friday to you, off on hols after today. Turns out I'll be flying across the Atlantic during the final, let my good lady book the flights, that's what I get eh? 104 here today, you said London is getting it hot as well? How about those Italians? Will try and put together one post with hosts for people to dip into.

Women, no idea of priorities! lol. Strange weather here. Very stormy but hot, mid to high 20's. Quite pleasant for you I guess?! Those Italians indeed. Didn't even consider they might beat Germany. It's a funny old game! haha! Sublime performance by Pirlo again, I hope he's got the legs for one more game, it'll be very interesting to see how he deals with the Spaniards with their quick and tight pressing. How about the Auld Enemy thinking about buying an English club if they go t*ts up in Scotland?

A Pirlo swan song would be a pleasant end to the tournament. I'm going to have to watch the game on delay but touching down in Barcelona 5 hrs after it has finished it'll be hard to avoid seeing the either dancing and singing or hiding and crying Spaniards. Should be a cracking final. Pirlo with perhaps last competitive match and Mario hitting a vein. It's all very disgusting in Glasgow right now mate, seems the authorities are trying everything they can to rescue Rankers. They can't. They are dead. They cheated for 10yrs and robbed the taxman (and us) of upwards of £124 mill. There is a reason teams in England invite Celtic for testimonial games, we take a vocal and non-violent travelling support. Remember what Rangers did in Manchester? Scotland's shame mate, English football does not need them. Scottish football is clinging to life mate, any part of it or my club that needs Rankers I can do without. Please don't get me started, I was in a good mood!

Always a joy to play Celtic mate, with the whole crowd singing the same song. Spine tingling! Let's leave it at that..

One of the best games I ever 'felt' was the Pool at CP. Macca scored a stunner after waltzing through our defense.

Wow, my above post went under anon, must have been due to mentioning the team that should not have been mentioned. Jorge Cadet, what a guy. Superb talent. His debut goal ( the fifth in a 5-0 thrashing of Aberdeen) saw the crowd cheer and scream so loud they blew out the BBC radio equipment true story.

@MacApple I went dedicated about 10 years ago. I tried it all prior to that, and even during the 10 years to cut on cost a bit (went through many VPS servers). Best way, go dedicated, do not install any control panels, use only SSH to login... I started out by installing Cpanel/whm (piece of crap), then plesk (which was actually decent for uptime), then the third one which I can't recall the name started with an "E". After deciding to just use SSH, in the last 5 years I haven't had any downtime (sorry I lie, had a faulty ram that needed replacement, so that was about 15 mins, and this year I switched servers since mine was getting old, another 30 mins). But yeah depending on your budget and how well you know linux/window servers, the only good way is dedicated :) For me at least. But yeah if you do want to go dedicated/or VPS and need someone to setup the server for you, let me know. I'll secure it up to the wall :) If you are planning to go VPS, they are difficult to find where the server is not oversold. I'm sure you know that. :) PS. I'm still in shock with Italy's win over Germany. Wow!

If the ball's in the air and it's not big Pierre, It's DiCanio. If the ball's in the net and it's not Jorge Cadet, It's DiCanio. If it's hit like a bomb and it's not Andy Thom, It's DiCanio. Go get that 'trash' can.

Good points @Coderx. I had a free dedicated box with my last employer, was gutted to lose it. Also had a slick virtual machine built on MS Hyper-V, the most reliable windows hosting I ever had. Had failover to Chicago from Louisville in event of any catastrophic failure, no way I could afford that now. VPS accounts are always oversold, we used to make a killing off them. 4 yr old box with 59 clients in it, easy money. Those were the old days though, lost my free boxes and sadly can't justify a full dedicated setup right now. Agreed with you entirely though. Germany started well enough and finished with a burst but Italy looked a different team.

@MacApple damn, yeah the setup you had is pretty expensive. I'm in the low end of dedicated machines. My failover is a VPS box (all the files up backed up each night from the dedicated to the VPS box). Not as sweet of a setup as your previous one. But it works, so far. Knock on wood:) I agree, everyone used to oversell, and still do. And I'm sure its still a big business for some people. Terrific game though I thought. I didnt get to see it live, stuck working... but got to see the replay of it.

Fred - I have just had three email notifications showing the exact same post by yourself on different threads. All of them saying visit my site and all of them on old threads, you just trying to bump up your post count and website hits?

@raveyd, if you look at my last 10 posts, you'll see that McApple's statement is false, whereas if you look at McApple's last 10 post one might conclude that his post are not substantive and only designed to Bump up his post count. I think he protest too much. (I can remember someone saying something like that on the Forum some time ago.) Fred
