How does app store work

Hey, was wondering how does app store work. I mean why do some apps end up in the Whats new section of the app store or of other apps that show new apps, wnad whats hot, and other apps dont? Is it just the big companies that get there? I'm trying out a site, applyzer.com, it gives you ranking.mnot sure I understand where. For instance, I have an app that says its ranked 25 in portugal in the travel category, if i go to that category i can browse through dozens of apps and not see mine. I wasnt expecting seeing my app in the whats new, but would like to know how it works. Thanks

I think we all wish we knew how the app store worked! All smoke and mirrors if you ask me. Another good tracking one...I think it was MacApple or MGoBlue that suggested it...is http://www.appannie.com/. I use it all the time to track my apps. It has pretty darn good statistics. Mark

Does anyone use AppViz? This is a wonderful tool to convert your sales (shown on ITC) into cash! It takes all reports from ITC and propagates them so you can see iad revenue and basically every days earnings in currency even taking into account the regions in which you sell. It also migrates reviews which is cool because you might have reviews on app stores in other countries that you'd not seen before. Its inexpensive and I think you even get a 30 day free trial then it simply stops working rather than you having to cancel. I'm hooked on that and have been for about 2 years now. Highly recommended.

On tip regarding the "Whats New": Set an actual date for your app release instead of releasing it automatically after it gets approved. If the average time to get reviewed is ~7 days, and then a couple hours for review, set your app to go for sale 9 days from your submit day. Reason: If you do this, your app will stay in the "What's New" from midnight - all day. Instead of staying in the "What's New" from the approval time (might be 4pm) until the end of the day. Helps with exposure more than you'd think.
