Should I go back to v1.5?

I've recently found it quite difficult to develop apps with v2.0. I am probably not understanding it very well. So I was wondering if I should just screw the app that I haven 2.0: I haven't done very much on it, and just restart in v1.5. I don't know if I'm going to miss anything out by doing this, but it is easier to use. Is it compatible with iOS6 for instance, and can I use Buzztouchmods.com for stuff like Push Notifications, even though I haven't really looked into that yet and I don't know how tricky that is. Anyway, what would I be missing out if I went back to v1.5. I prefer v1.5 because it is easier and already has the icons. I can get PDF docs and stuff like that because I can share them over DropBox.

I don't know if I'm going to miss anything out by doing this, In the very short run in iOS you won't miss much. (Operative words "very short") but it is easier to use. How do? Is it compatible with iOS6 for instance, Buzztouch will be, and can I use Buzztouchmods.com for stuff like Push Notifications Did you mean Buzztouch.com? Either way, yes , even though I haven't really looked into that yet and I don't know how tricky that is. Baby steps. Anyway, what would I be missing out if I went back to v1.5. The future and greater power and flexibility. I prefer v1.5 because it is easier and already has the icons. Get icons from Buzztouchmods.com I can get PDF docs and stuff like that because I can share them over DropBox. Dropbox works with BTv1.4, BTv1.5 & BTv2.0. Strongly recommend you sick with BTv2.0 self-hosting. Fred

Well, I'm not on Self Hosting at the moment, and i do generally find v1.5 easier to use. I'm not sure.

Oh, and by the way, is there any way to get maps and docs showing in the iPhone simulator. It doesn't seem to work?

So, I guess one of the first questions to ask is do you have a self-hosted BT Server? If not, then much of what Fred says (though correct) does not apply to you. Since you can't load any new plugins to the buzztouch.com version of BT, you're "stuck" with the current functionality. So, some thoughts: * v1.5 is fully functional, from a plugin perspective, for iOS. There are some holes in Android, in terms of functionality. * David @ buzztouch is focusing on BT2 (available at bt.com and self-hosted) as the future of buzztouch. There is more functionality coming just around the corner. * David is likely to provide a migration path for apps going from v1.5 to v2.0 in the future. * Full iOS 6 compatibility won't be introduced by BT until the final version of iOS 6 is available and David has time to do what magic he needs to do. * At the moment, you're actually missing out on "some" functionality using v2.0 because not everything is available that's available in v1.5 (no need to argue about this with me, Fred...just saying in general. There are exceptions to most everything), at least from an iOS perspective. Plus, it's been around for a while, and it pretty solid. Hope this helps a bit! Mark

Stick with BT 2.0. You'll be better off in long run. As far as I know nobody offers a Push plugin, you'll have to implement something like Parse, I can help with that. it is not a native plugin with BT or the other site you mentioned. As Fred says BT will be cool with iOS6.

Not sure if you can, I'm android so I'll leave that to another, just bear in mind the simulator can not do many things the actual device can do. The Android Emulator is a virtual device and can do almost anything a device can do. Fred

I change what I just said and am more inclined to agree with Mark. The future if BT is Server.

v1.5 is fully functional, from a plugin perspective, for iOS. There are some holes in Android, in terms of functionality. Very big holes, as documented in my Buzztouch Screens article. * David @ buzztouch is focusing on BT2 (available at bt.com and self-hosted) as the future of buzztouch. There is more functionality coming just around the corner. Plus many others are creating plugins for BTv2.0, not likely to happen with BTv1.5. (But there been a bit of work on using the BTv1.5 screen called "Custom Plugin" link in my article.) * David is likely to provide a migration path for apps going from v1.5 to v2.0 in the future. Not likely any time soon. If David said otherwise maybe, but don't have false hope. * Full iOS 6 compatibility won't be introduced by BT until the final version of iOS 6 is available and David has time to do what magic he needs to do. Yes, this will take a bit of time, but not a big issue, so don't worry be happy. * At the moment, you're actually missing out on "some" functionality using v2.0 because not everything is available that's available in v1.5 As I noted "in the very short run", but if you read my Buzztouch Screens article there's almost nothing you can do in BTv1.5 iOS that you can't do in BTv2.0 iOS. But most importantly, you can use 3rd party plugin files, with Buzztouch.com BTv2.0 apps. Sure you have to take a few extra steps, but it's possible and it works. If you invest a lot into an app (mostly time) it'll be a shame to be stuck in BTv1.5. BTv1.5 is a powerful tool (and will get slightly better), BTv2.0 is a very powerful tool & will become even more powerful. But either version, you have to consider the self-hosting possibility and how easily having a server will enhance your app. That's very true for BTv2.0. Your choice. Fred

Eventually you will want to switch, but switch to self-hosted 2.0 when you want to and are ready for it. 1.5 is tried and true.

As a newbie some of the comment here are quite interesting, I have just spent HOURS trying to get a Powerpoint to run in the iPhone simulator, followed all the instructions carefully, and - nothing - just a message that either says some of the data did not cache, or check my internet connection - I get the same messages when I tried converting the Powerpoint to a PDF, and trying both ways of getting it on the device, both the URL method and directly uploading... I read from the above, that even though I get that message on the simulator, it may actually work on the actual device... is that right? I do not have a developer license yet, wanted to create, and play, and trial before hand, but how will I Actually KNOW it works? If anyone can offer help, that would be great!

Hi @leanne, It should absolutely work in the simulator. I have a v1.5 and v2 app that use PDF and XLS docs, and they work perfectly, nothing additional required. Can you let us know what is says in the Xcode debug console? That'll help us pinpoint the problem. Here's a document that shows how to get that info: http://www.buzztouch.com/resources/Problem_Reporting_and_Basic_Debug_v1.0.pdf Also...make sure there are no spaces in the filename you are trying to load. That'll pretty much guarantee that it won't work. Let us know how it goes! Mark
