Map plugin

My map plugin on my app isn't working. I have it all run-in but when open it on my phone or the android emulator the maps pages will show the little red pins but not the actual map/terrain.

Is it showing a grey squared background? I had the same issue, studied, re-studied, and punched my laptop quite a bit, then had a cup of tea and re-downloaded the source code and followed the API steps again and it worked! GoNorthWest helped me alot with this so i guess when they wake up on that side of the pond he will give you a hand! Cheers, Aaron

I never found out. When re-downloding the source code again i deleted the project, and the second time, before I ran anything I made sure that I had followed every word of the guides available to me. One thing I remember noticing was that I couldnt remember commenting out the text at the bottom of the manifest, other than that you might be best waiing for the guru's to come online! Cheers, Aaron

I would love to but it would probably be littered with slepping mistakes and not be accurate, Instead try this one that Fred @ MySkylla put together! http://myskylla.wordpress.com/2012/03/13/buzztouch-google-maps/ Alternatively try the below, written by Mark/GoNorthWest http://www.buzztouch.com/resources/Obtaining_a_Google_Maps_API_Key_v1.0.pdf When I had issues I used both, they are both great! Cheers, Aaron

Hint: don't get or use debug key with maps API. Test on device not the Emulator. Fred

To follow up on what Fred said, I used the same API key for both and everything seemed resolved, never published the App though so unsure if it would cause issues when submitting to Play Store!

I've not been able to get the maps working on the Emulator with the debug key. It only works with the release key for some reason. And I DO test on an Emulator, and encourage you to as well, if you don't have a device. Testing on a device is much more preferable than an emulator, but testing in general is more preferable than not testing at all, so if all you have is an emulator, you are HIGHLY encouraged to use it! Yeah, you could send it around to people with devices for testing. I tried that, and it takes forever (if people even do it), and then they rarely provide you the feedback you're looking for. So, the emulator is crucial for that initial testing. Fred will argue with me on that (and I won't argue it further), but I'm sticking to my guns that the emulator can be a valuable part of your testing. Mark

This thread is about maps and my post is regarding maps. As you noted debug key and maps and Emulator = problem. So as I noted: Hint: don't get or use debug key with maps API. Test on device not the Emulator. Fred

I don't use the emulator so much, as my whole house hold if full with android (9+). And i find that the emulator is a pain in the backside, as it is so slow!!! When you said that i you used the same API for both, do you mean that you put the same API key into the strings.xlm twice or just once???

If you have an extra Android device, send it my way! ;-) The emulator is the worst I've used, but it's all I have. This doc shows what to do for maps: http://www.buzztouch.com/resources/Common_Android_Errors_and_Solutions_v1.0.pdf You can just ignore the debug key. You only need the release one, so don't even worry about specifying the debug one. Mark

I actually have a 7" tablet i never use, its a bit slow but ok, just has a crack in the middle of the screen. wasn't much its $100 from www.kogan.com! And i have done this but the map still isn't working on the emulator, but i will gig it a test on my phone today in class or whenever :P

The only way I have been successful in getting it to work is to create the actual apk file using the release key, and then installing the apk directly to the emulator. Can't get it working via run and build from eclipse. Probably cost me more than $100 to order and have it shipped to the US! Just looking for something to test my apps on! Mark

Give us your address Mark and say $10 and another $10 shipping I can sort you out mark, I've got a few spare ones work have given me over the years, I can even put any version of Android you want on it ;) Message me if you want to! Jawdoss - I used the same key in each line, as Mark said you shouldnt need the debugging key, but I wanted some consistency, and it seemed to work! Cheers, Aaron

Did you also do the part in the XML file where you change debugKey to releaseKey? You don't put the actual key, but just change the words. And you MUST sign the app with the same release key you used to get your Maps API. Mark

In a real app or in the Emulator? The Show Location doesn't work in the Emulator because...well, there's no GPS hardware! If in the real app, do you have Turn on GPS specified in your Core Properties setting? Mark
