Quick question on SelfHosted vs. Enterprise

I am reviewing the info on the self hosted vs. the enterprise options, but have a couple of questions. (I was going to email from the contact us page, but thought it might not get read). Is there any major difference between the two? i.e., does the self hosted show the buzztouch branding but enterprise doesn't? Or do neither? And is it possible to do the enterprise but on my own server? (I have a dedicated server with LiquidWeb and do NOT want to change to another host, LW is too excellent :). I'd appreciate a response for anyone who knows, Thanks.

Hello @imtrying, The Enterprise version is basically Self Hosted, but with serious high availability behind it. You'd get your own server in the Rackspace cloud, and all that comes with it. Basically...for probably 99% of the people out there...self-hosted should be sufficient. If you like your current web provider, already have a dedicated server, and it meets the requirements (LAMP) for install, then you should be good. The Enterprise level is more for large corporations that need to develop and manage corporate level apps. Plus, it's considerably more expensive than the Self-Hosted route! The BT Server software is the same on each (perhaps some minor differences, but nothing that probably concerns you). You can still tweak the software to your liking on the Self-Hosted. Mark

Okay thanks for that - I appreciate it :) Now I have to figure out the API keys (what the 100 limit means...) on self hosted lol. (Sent an email in for that, hopefully I'll get a response) Amber

The API key is what is used to contact the buzztouch.com servers and generate your source code packages. Even though you may Self-Host, the actual magic that occurs in generating the source code you download is done on the buzztouch servers. Unless you change an icon file, you should really only need to do that once per project. So, 100 API calls per month should be plenty...unless you're a developer powerhouse with tons of apps going on! In that case...email them, and I bet they hook you up. Mark

So essentially, its around 1 api key per app compiled? That's fantastic :) I was using gomobile, but I'm really frustrated at the limitations, so I want to get buzztouch running where I have some control. Do you know if the self hosted "has" to be on a root domain or could it be on a subdomain? i.e., apps.mysite.com ? and/or does it "have" to have /buzztouch/ ? Sorry for the questions - I'm used to creating stuff and I can do websites, etc. but I'm not an expert in this side yet :) (This should be the last question I hope!)

Hi Amber, No problem with the questions...keep 'em coming! You actually get 1 API key per self-hosted server. You just get 100 calls with that key to the buzztouch.com server for code generation. It really shouldn't be a problem for you at all. No, BT Server does not have to be installed in the root domain. And it does not have to be /buzztouch. Mine is installed in mydomainname.com/btserver, and it works just fine. If you need help setting it up, just let me know! Mark

@GoNorthWest is spot on. However, I'll add my two cents (along with the email to @imtrying a few hours ago)... Self Hosted vs. Enterprise: The idea here is that some organizations don't to, or can't understand, or don't want to bother with enterprise type issues that oftentimes come up in corporate settings. The Enterprise model is full service. We setup a server, we monitor it, back it up, keep it updated, secure, and running like a charm. For most folks this means we setup a dedicated server for them in the RackSpace cloud. In some cases we do all this work on their existing equipment. In our opinion it's better to use RackSpace but we're OK with other options. Because the price doesn't change (we charge the same fee to do either), it makes sense that a would be enterprise client would want us to setup a new machine and not use their existing equipment. Same fee so why not? It's true that the software itself is the same, it's a matter of person-power / hours / professionalism. Some places have the resources to pull this off, some do not. Enterprise is for those that do not, or wish not worry about all the details of running a backend that powers their apps. We agree that if your organization has the skill, time, and experience to run a backend, you should do it - it's far cheaper. We are here to help in either case ;-)
