BT Control Panel on GoDaddy

I'm trying to setup the buzztouch CP on my Godaddy host. I'm also pretty familiar with the process of setting up websites (having done dozens of small scale sites over the years), including WordPress, Mantis, VBulletin, Ravennuke, etc. So... I enter in my DB details on the BT install page and I get this error: "There was a problem connecting to the database server. Are you sure you entered the proper user credentials? Server is usually localhost, User Name and Password could be just about anything! Ask your server's administrator if you're unsure." I tried localhost, and the fully qualified hostname (which normally isn't needed anyways). Neither works. I know this isn't much to go off of, but any ideas? Also, is the Buzztouch CP compatible with MySQL 5.0? Godaddy no longer offers 4.x dbs... at least for my deluxe linux host plan.

Hi @Stormy, Sounds like you are on the right track. It very well could be something on the GoDaddy side. I'm pretty sure I've seen others in the Forum using GoDaddy. I'd contact their support and make sure that the paths to the DB are as you expect them to be, and that you indeed have the right db name? Mark

I started on GoDaddy and after much pulling out of the very rare hair follicle, and David scratching his head, we came up with the solution! I moved to Host Gator. Good luck. Tim

@GoNorth There isn't much in the way of config when it comes to Godaddy. Installations like this usually tend to work, or not work. And yes, I'm using the correct paths and db/username. @Tim LoL. Great. Unfortunately, I have way too many sites to migrate, and I really want to avoid paying for a new web host... just for BT... With some debugging we should at least be able to pinpoint what the issue is. I'm sure the BT application isn't so unique that something couldn't be modified to accommodate Godaddy hosting better. How can we debug this? I'll be the guinea pig!

I used Godaddy without a hitch. Have you set up the database for the BT_server yet?

I figured you were using the correct settings...but I had to ask! Looking forward to seeing how this gets resolved. This sounds like good info for a tutorial! Mark

@MQCMobile Can you clarify your Godaddy setup? What version of MySQL? What version of BT_server? When did you get this setup?

MySQL version 5.0 BT_server 2.1.6 I got it set up back in January of this year. I can try to work on a tutorial, but it might be some time in the near future till I have enough time to spare. @Stormy What have you done so far with your GoDaddy database that your trying to install the server on? Is it a clean new database, Is it just being added to a database already set up?

I created a new DB and have tried every possible host/path combination I can think of. As for a tutorial, if you didn't modify anything out of the ordinary, I'm not sure it'll help. There really isn't much to it! sadness..

Since I may be in the same boat, may I ask if you thought GoDaddy was very helpful in this process? I would think they wouldn't want to lose a lot of customers over this. I will cancel my account if I have to....I don't need two hosting plans. I want to stay with GoDaddy if I can because it is convenient to have my accounts in one place.

I am doubting many Godaddy customers would be impacted by this. Of all the BT community, and of those whom it isn't working (so far just you and me)... I don't see this as a Godaddy issue. IMO, this is a BT issue until the installation wizard/documentation can be updated.

I don't think it is just you and me....I have seen other forum topics with problems with GoDaddy. I am going to try this the week after next week, and I will post back here what happens.

Hello! Finally something I can help with with ;) This is my process for setting up BT server 2.0 on GoDaddy. Log in to your GoDaddy Account. Click on "My Account". Click the "+" symbol next to "Web Hosting" Choose "Launch" for your desired Domain. You should now be at your "Hosting Dashboard" and have a list of "YourDomain.com" with the FTP Settings and whatnot below it (note this FTP stuff, you'll be back to this later) followed by settings, content and a databases tab. Expand the Databases tab. Click on "MySQL" You should now be on your MySQL Dashboard, and be able to see any databases you have setup. Click the "Pencil" icon under the actions menu, for the database you want more info on... You should get something like blahblahblah.db.111111.hostedresource.com Make sure you have the correct Database name, Username, and password. install BT Server per the instructional PDF that is included in the download. When you get to BT_Server/install, your physical path should be filled in. For your application ROOT URL, you HAVE TO INCLUDE HTTP:// before your web address. Enter your "blahblahblah.db.111111.hostedresource.com" for your Database Server like "localhost"... Enter Your Database Name, Enter your Username (in many cases I make both database name and username the same to avoid confusion, and its like this by default on GoDaddy) Enter your Database Password Leave the prefix alone... Select Next Green check in red box... check Press Next... For part 4, you will need your FTP information and a FTP client (http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client) Go to the directory where you installed BT_Server and in that folder you will find "config.php" (if you are using filezilla, on the left side of the FTP Client, select the folder you wish to download to and then double click config.php to download it.) Starting on line 26 you will find: /* database server information */ define("APP_DB_HOST", "localhost"); define("APP_DB_NAME", "yourDbName"); define("APP_DB_USER", "yourDbUserName"); define("APP_DB_PASS", "yourDbPassword"); Change it what it supposed to be and drag and drop it into your FTP, on top of the old config.php, say yes to the overwrite, while you are here verify your permissions are correct. BAM! go make some apps... EDIT: One thing I forgot to mention, Direct Database Access is off by default. You may need to enable this (depends on hosting package), and it cannot be changed on existing databases. Its also less secure and does not support SSL. If you aren't sure, just try making a new database with it on (Allow Direct Database Access = yes) and repeat the steps I listed above. If I missed anything, sorry, tried to be thorough. but let me know and I'll add anything you guys can think of. Even if this doesnt help you stormy... thanks for the motivation to make me write it here... hopefully it will help someone someday. *Sources: Done it myself 5+ times with no problems. *Disclaimer: Godaddy's favorite hobby is changing the interface on their website... so this information will only be good until they change their site again, im guessing this will all be wrong by the end of the week.

@CBungert awesome post and much appreciated. @Stormy2021: We are happy to look into this if you can't get it going with @CBungert's guidance. If you want us to have a look, we'll need some credentials you DO NOT want to post to this forum. Use the contact us screen to begin an email thread and we'll go from there ;-)

Ugh, how embarrassing. GoNorthWest had it right all along... my credentials were wrong!!!!! After double checking the DB/username, and resetting the password.. all went through. Going through CBungert's guide prompted me to absolutely double check everything. So ashamed right now. Thanks everyone! P.S. I noticed since i started this process, 2.1.7 is now available... lol.

You can now consider yourself well versed... The Upgrade to 2.1.7 should only take you 5 min. Dont forget to back up your "files" folder :) EDIT: David beat me to the punch by 42 seconds

I just realized that the control panel is worthless without an API key. And the API key is $30/month?? Seriously? That is more than my deluxe (and unlimited) linux web hosting. I only went down this "self-hosted" path because BT somehow does not seem to offer more than HTML5 screens, let alone music players and galleries. So i figured plug-ins... thats the ticket. But for 1 or 2 apps... $30/month?? na. Maybe I just fall into that demographic where Im not hardcore enough to justify $30 a month, but also can't handle the severe restrictions the free and native BT seems to ship with. Back to Andromo I guess.

@Stormy2021: "Severe restrictions" - that isn't the intention. We totally understand if a monthly fee (we think $30 a month is reasonable) isn't right for your situation. I normally wouldn't wouldn't try to "justify" our pricing model in a public forum but you got me with the "Seriously?" comment. Yes, seriously. A few things to keep in mind. -The control panel is not worthless without an API key. Did you read the instructions? Lots and lots of folks use this wonderful FREE software to do all sorts of great things for FREE. If you're unable to take advantage of what it can do for you, OK, we get it. That doesn't make it "worthless." - "More than deluxe and unlimited linux web hosting." The API key is not a web hosting solution (it's your back end, not ours, that's the whole point). There are countless web hosts, including free web hosts. The API key is designed for people that want to take advantage of what the self hosted package can do when used in combination with the buzztouch API. It's OK if you don't understand this. -"BT somehow does not seem to offer more than HTML5 screens, let alone music players and galleries." I'm not sure where you're going with this but maybe you thought there was a more extensive list of plugins available for those that self host. I guess there is if you found some third party plugins or something. Or better yet, made some yourself. We don't have a "longer list" of plugins for people that self host. We've considered this kind of thing before, haven't done it. -"severe restrictions the free and native BT seems to ship with". This confuses me. We allow tens of thousands of folks to create tens of thousands of apps that serve all sorts of people in all sorts of countries, for FREE and somehow it comes across as restrictive? Not sure how to respond to this. But, why not make an app, then move the config.txt file to a DropBox account or your own website - no "view limits" there, right? It's obvious that I take this stuff personally and this post may come off a bit defensive - it is. It's totally OK if buzztouch isn't a good solution for you but I couldn't help but get defensive when I read your post so I responded as transparently as anyone you'll find online (as I always do). We'll continue to work hard to improve and do what we can to help folks that pay us and happily continue to help folks that take advantage of our free offerings to the best of our abilities. We wish you well in your app making endeavors.

I may have been out of line. My sincerest apologies all around. You are correct, I probably don't understand a lot of what BT can REALLY do... But in my defense, the documentation is lacking in most areas. And these forums have a terrible search mechanism. I went through all the videos, took the exams seriously, and clicked around quite a bit afterwards. So far, I've just been let down... My own ignorance? Probably. Are there ways to get around the limitations? Definitely. But I came here to use an app generator, not reinvent the wheel, and certainly not to jump through hoops. //incredibly frustrated.

@Stormy2021: Totally understand. Totally get it. Totally OK to be frustrated. Sincere thanks for giving it a go, tolerating a developer rant (late night as usual), and understanding that we are all in this for different reasons. Stick around as needed or find a new solution, we'll be here either way. Cheers. d.
