Location Based Apps & New Apple Maps

Will Apple's replacing Google Maps with its own mapping app as the system's default have an effect on how existing iPhone apps that use Google Maps for location maps will work? Will apps have to updated?

I wondered this too. Just remember that it IS speculation that apple will be doing that. I doubt apple will cause us trouble with it. (they did the same with iAds and Admob a while back). David. buzztouchmods.com

Have a feeling it will happen since Google rushed out that failed map demo during week. Who knows for sure though. We'll find out soon enough and have plenty of time to update. Interesting days ahead.

Apple are looking set to ditch Google maps for their own setup.

I guess if you have both IOS and Android versions of your location-based app the POIs will appear at the same location on either app platform - unless Apple decides to implement its own version of the Latitude/Longitude system - lol! (On second thought maybe that's not so funny).

I'll venture a guess that Apple doesn't interfere with Google maps since it could (would) be a costly mistake for Apple. If their roll out of Apple maps is not flawless and they bounce Google maps, they'll immediately lose market share to Android making Facebook's debacle seem mildly amusing by comparison. Fred

When I heard about this, I wondered if Apple might start requiring that iPhone apps include Apple maps rather that Google maps. Seems to be tough enough as is to get Apple to approve an app, think they might reject an app if it runs Google map rather than Apple map?

This is a slight concern. I have a location based app that does well on the app store. It appears definite that apple have their own mapping app and that google will be dropped. Where will this leave apps programmed with google maps? More worrying for us, where will it leave BT created location apps??

Did they boot Google maps, as in our Google maps on iOS devices not working? If their roll out of Apple maps is not flawless and they bounce Google maps, Fred

Good news form a very reliable source - The new Apple maps are totally backwards compatible with the old maps. You should recompile on 6.0, but you don’t need to, it will pick up the new maps automatically
