HTML/TEXT trouble in self hosted

Hi, I'm having trouble adding images to my html/text screen. I've done apps before in buzztouch, so I know the "how to", and where to put the images. In my hosted server, I'm trouble having images show up, and I notice the following in my html source code, in the screen window. I have this code: <img align="left" height="233" hspace="9" src="arnoia.png" width="311" /> I press save, I leave this screen, and when I come back to it, I get this: <img align="&quot;left&quot;" height="&quot;233&quot;" hspace="&quot;9&quot;" src="" width="&quot;311&quot;" And I have no image in my simulator or device. Ideias? Thanks

I think the problem is that for some reason, my server is not saving this info. I tried what you suggested. I saved, I left the screen, when I came back, I found this instead: &lt;img data-cke-saved-src="\" src="\&amp;quot;arnoia.png" \"width="\&amp;quot;311\&amp;quot;" height="\&amp;quot;233\&amp;quot;"&gt;

I've even tried using exacly the same text on a working app I build at buzz touch server, and it doesn't work. I mean the text comes out great, just ain't able to add images, for some reason its not saving these changes.

Its surely something related to the self hosted. because, if I use a html doc, and stick in the Xcode with the image (thats already there) it works fine. So, although I don't know code, I think the code must be ok here. Cheers, and thanks for helping out.

i dont usually work with custom, if nothing works and you use an html doc, just make sure you have everything you want in the app, and if worse comes to worse you resend in app store

Best not to use. Create HTML and post on Dropbox in public folder. Link using custom URL screen. Depending on your HTML you may need to use LNA Browser. Fred

I had the same problem and it took me 8 months to get it fixed! it's not your server its the php you must place an php.ini file inside the folder below /files/plugins/bt_screen_customHTML/ the php.ini must contain the following code: magic_quotes_gpc = Off

magic_quotes_gpc = Off There are countless ways a PHP backend can be setup and for sure the magic_quotes_gpc = Off option can affect things. Bottom line is this...when you use a Custom HTML screen, the self hosted software saves the entries to a FILE in the apps /data directory. Save the screen, look at this file using a normal editor. Does it look right? All the device does is download this file, nothing else. It doesn't matter how the file was created (HTML editor, the self hosted panel, etc), if it's valid HTML, it's valid HTML. If it's not, it's not and the reason it's not will need to be determined. When you modify a Custom HTML screen, the self hosted panel is reading the previously saved file then putting it's contents in the Text Editor. Not too complicated. @Fred: Why is the Custom HTML screen "best not to use" as you put it? For some folks DropBox and files in other locations are not idea. That's the idea behind the simple editor in the self hosted panel, it's easy. If it's not working as designed, the backend should be adjusted so it does.

@David, The reason I recommend not to use the Custom HTML text screen is that it gives so many people trouble and it doesn't seem to have a solution. Here @jonathanmiami is saying magic_quotes_gpc = Off is the solution, but you're saying that's not the problem. Happily I would blog about what to fix about the backend if we knew what to fix. Using the screen is best done by first having a copy of the file since it's subject to sudden and arbritary loss. Now mind you I love using the editor (and would love it more of it was mobile friendly). But the uncertainanty of when it will work and when it will not had led me to no longer use it. I can accomplish same without it. For new users it's frustrating because they're unaware of the issues. Perhaps I'm wrong but my understanding is that the screen simply allows the hosting of the file in a server, the server hosting the Control Panel in particular, with the use of the text editor. If such is correct, then using my own text editor and placing the file online I accomplish same without the uncertainty. An interesting issue came up the other day. The user need to refresh a dynamic page, but to do needed the pages URL. Don't exactly remember the setup, but the solution was to not use the screen, but instead use a HTML doc screen via a URL. I assume the Control Panel was masking the URL making the page refresh a problem. This has nothing to do with the backend problem, but just opened up the question, how does the Control handle the URL? So, my question is how to determine the problem and what's the solution, otherwise I'll just sidestep is issue by not using the screen. Thanks for your input above. Fred

@David a huge constant bug report is the editor not saving the information/code sometimes. It's caused me so many headaches this past... year? This is why I do not recommend using custom HTML either unless you backup the html on your computer before saving and leaving the screen - it's -extremely- erratic when it comes to saving and not saving. It's been established that the editor simply doesn't work and needs fixing/updating/new one - however you guys have been busy (understandable) and haven't been able to look into it yet (haven't seen any replies on the bug reports about this). Would love to know if this can be looked at sometime soon! * Best way to fix this for now is as Fred says: create a html document with another editor, upload it somewhere like drop box and use the custom url screen! Hope all is well! David buzztouchmods.com

Makes sense guys. The only ongoing issue I'm aware of is the order in which the Save button is used. When the screen is re-visited and the Save button is used that NOT under the html / text entry box, like in the advanced settings, it doesn't save the contents of the text / html entry. This is the way I understand it, could be different. I'll find some time to dig into this and update the plugin, we'll go from there.

Save button is used that NOT under the html / text entry box Perhaps (operative word), if the button function was revised to first save the HTML, then save Advance Settings. Expecting users to save in correct order is not a feasible solution, because even if they know, they'll forget (that's me) and most will never know till it's a problem. As we all know, no one ever reads the readme file until someone in the Forum tells them to, and even then only after a few more request for help. Fred

What happened to me was that I edited the text with and image. Press save, just save the html doc, no other settings. I then went to the screens page. I opened again the html /text screen, and what I just saved was there, except for the image text, that was somehow changed.

Diagnose and fixed @MadRod's problem. It was NOT related to the "save button." Here's what I did... a) I logged into the self hosted panel and looked at the funky screen. This is a Custom HTML / Text screen. I verified that the HTML was NOT SAVING. An img tag was empty and had no source after adding one then saving. b) I entered a URL from a random image and saved. Refreshed the page, NOT SAVED. This verified the "not saving" issue. c) I connected to the server with FTP and downloaded the html file that is created each time you click Save when working with HTML / Text. These files are stored in each applications documents directory. In this case: /files/applications/[app id]/documents/customHTML_[screen id].html customHTML_[screen id].html is the file. The file contained the data as expected BUT it contained some additional slashes surrounding the src attribute for the image. d) Because the extra slashes are being added by PHP "automatically" using php's built in magic_quotes routine, I adjusted the code to check to see if magic_quotes was on and if it was, I stripped these extra slashes. This was done in save_AJAX.php in the BT_screen_customHTML plugin folder. I added this on line 195 of save_AJAX.php if(get_magic_quotes_gpc()){ //remove automatically inserted slashes! $editorContent = stripslashes($editorContent); } e) I re visited the screen, added an image src then saved. Fixed. I've added this to the plugin issue list and will get this update included with some other updates I've been trying to get released.

David, Unfortunately, this isn't the only problem (as I just found out). I was simply adding text, bolding it, and then copying the source into another HTML screen and editing the values, saving. It "saved" but it actually didn't, and lost my html. Please see the email I sent you with the exact data/values I used in the order of the problem. No images were used. Take care, David buzztouchmods.com

Yes, I also noticed that when using these screens, even with just text, it shows up all black on my devices or simulator. But in my case what I add to the screen stays saved, but it just doesn't show up. Was trying to see if I understood what David did before reporting here. Cheers

Hey MadRod, I just recently ran into this problem when giving this screen a second chance (haha!), and I noticed that it occurred without me having any images. I sent David a extensive email of what I did, hopefully he responds or takes a look before updating this screen with only his first fix. Take care, David buzztouchmods.com

I haven't looked at the email from MrDavid yet but will add this before I do... Take a step back a bit and try to separate the control panel from the app. In other words, "I have a black screen" is totally different than "HTML won't save." -------HTML Not Saving ---------------------- If HTML isn't saving as expected, look at the file on the file system to see if it contains what you expect. If not, OK, the HTML editor isn't working as expected. BUT, this doesn't mean the HTML editor is the only thing that could be causing issues. There are countless settings in a PHP installation used to manage all sorts of things in the servers environment. Like "slashes" "magic_quotes" etc, etc. Lots of folks don't get this an assume there is something "wrong" with the way the self hosted panel is setup. It's not necessarily "wrong" or "broken" of "buggy" or "not working" just because it doesn't work on any one particular server. It's a tough game to figure out sometimes. The debug process is usually this: a) Make some HTML / text, whatever - click Save. b) Look at the file on the file system (created or updated when you saved). Open it in a plain text editor (ftp used to get it usually), does it look right? If not... c) Figure out what values are being passed from the editor (client side) and the server. FIgure out where the issue is. -------App Black Screen ---------------------- If the App is showing a "Black screen" it has nothing to do with the control panel. I say this in a literal sense. The app requests the HTML file from a file system somewhere. If this file isn't right, well, it's not right. The app doesn't have any idea who / where / when this html file was created, it just asks for the file. That is a long way to say if the app is misbehaving, grab the URL to the file it's looking for and load it in your browser - does it look right? If not, fix the HTML for this file (see above paragraph). I'll find MrDavid email and see what he's running into. But, I dont' expect what he's finding on his setup to be the same issue / fix / update for everyone else's setup. Could be, no likely....

I believe the "Black Screen" issue is a background color issue. Simply reset the background color, but be sure to have backup copy of html before you do so. Fred

Ok. I understand the diference of what you explained. Sorry if I implied any misbehaving of the app. So I tried to find to what URL it was redirecting my custom html screen, I looked at the BT_config.txt, I think this is where I should look for it. And its not there. There is nos URL. I compared the config file with a config file from the buzztouch server, and at buzztouch config file I find the correspondent URL for each custom HTML. In my hosted server it does seem to be there. Would it help if I posted the config file? Thanks

Hi Fred, its not that, I tried I tried using white letters, so they would be visible in a black screen. It seems for some reason, its not posting the URL in my config file.

/files/applications/[app id]/documents/customHTML_[screen id].html Look at the Config file for app id & screen Id. From David's post above . The URL will not be in the Config file. Apparently the URL is created dynamically. Fred

Ok, so I found the file where you said it would be, and the URL would be this. http://www.computerdoctors.pt/BT-server/files/applications/EAE50D16D0ECBF70D505E8FB6/documents/customHTML_4DC1002F433ED135E4E4243.html It opens ok. But if it not in the config file, how does the app know where to look for it?

The Config file contains the app is & the screen Id and the code contains the rest. The URL is created dynamically when the code needs it. Look at the custom HTML plugins for the appropriate files. It may be in the custom URL plugin files. Fred

I understood how the app knows where to look for the file. Thank you. I found my URL where you said it would be, in the documents in my app. Is that the url it uses? In my case it would be this one: http://www.computerdoctors.pt/BT-server/files/applications/EAE50D16D0ECBF70D505E8FB6/documents/customHTML_4DC1002F433ED135E4E4243.html Miguel.

Lol. Thank you. So the URL is ok. This means the app isn't looking for the URL in the correct place or that for some reason it's not able to open it? The feeling I get when I run the app is that its not loading anything. Its just black.
