google map api key

Been through the tutorials to create a release keystore and have got the certificate fingerprints for both debug & release keystores. When I go into google though and try to generate the API key I keep getting "The fingerprint that you entered is not valid" I've tried it several times now for both keystores but keep getting the same error message. Any ideas Many Thanks ROB
