API and emulator problem in Eclipse

Hi everyone! I downloaded the source code and started new Android project. The problem starts when I picked Google APIs platform 1.6 API 4. After picking that, I get a red x mark on "src" file in the project explorer, and I cannot run the emulator. So I right-clicked on my project->properties, and changed Google APIs to platform 4.03 API 15. The red x mark on "src" file is gone, and I can run the emulator. However, my app does not show in the emulator. Also, it's not blue screen background like it's in the Buzztouch tutorial video on Eclipse. It is this multi orange color stripes. Just for info, I followed GoNorthWest's helpful instruction to set up and I'm running Eclipse Indigo. Please help! My project is due soon! Thanks!

Which BT version are you using? For BT 1.5 the Google API's checkbox should automatically select after choosing the source of your new project to Google API's Platform 2.2 and API level 8. If you don't see Google API's 2.2 in your list of available Targets then you don't have the necessary SDK components installed. Be sure to include the Google Maps Library when you install the components.

Okay, so I downloaded platform 2.2 and api 8 and applied them to my project. Does it usually take a long time to get emulator up and running? Mine has android word across, and it is flashing but not loading to home screen. It's been 20 minutes. I know my computer is slow, I admit that. How long should I wait and how can I make it go faster? The console says: Waiting for HOME ('android.process.acore') to be launched... I'm using BT v 2.0. I wish I had a Mac since it seems like Xcode is so much better than Eclipse! Thanks!

Usually it takes longer the first time. Mine took 4-5 minutes when i tried to set it up for the first time. My machine is Win 7 32 bit, Dual core Pentium CPU @ 2.70 GHz, with 2 Gb RAM. Now it takes only a couple of minutes to get the emulator started. I think 20 minutes is to long for any computer. BTW, do you read the instructions file that comes with the source code? If not, i recommend you to fgo through it. You will find it very helpful reading it.

Hi @gracefullydone, Yep, sometimes it takes ages for the Emulator to come up. The slower the computer, the longer it takes. And then, to add insult to injury, when it finally does come it, sometimes it's taken so long that Eclipse has given up trying to install the app, and you have to start from scratch! The current state of the process can be seen in the Console pane, and it's clear if it's working or not. You can't really make it load faster, because it's all Java based. You can configure Eclipse to wait longer before it bails, but I have not found the exact command yet. Still digging on that one. One thing you can try and do is install the apk this way: http://www.androidaz.com/development/how-install-application-and-copy-files-android-emulator I've been successful doing that, but it does not allow for debug in Eclipse. But at least you can see what the program looks like! Mark

No... I would prefer Eclipse over Xcode. Its really easy once you understand how to use it.

Thanks Sandeep and GoNorthWest! Also, GoNorthWest, thanks for your instructions in the How To's, they were really helpful. The emulator is really taking a long time. Do you think it would be really not a wise idea to create app without running it in the emulator? Probably... I have an Android phone but it does not have USB to connect to my phone. I'm just creating a simple story app where I'm creating story images from Photoshop, and users can just swipe images without whole menu. Lastly, what do you guys suggest if nothing works at the end? Do you know if there is another great site like Buzztouch? I wish Goggle still kept the Google App Inventor... Should I borrow someone's Mac and try Xcode? Thanks again!

Hi! I'd ditch the emulator and test on your phone. Just create the apk file (don't include any spaces in the filename), and send it to yourself via email. Check the email on your phone, click on the apk, and it'll install. Easy peasy! You'll need to sign it with the debug keystore, and also give your phone permission to install debug apps. There are NO other sites as great as buzztouch! I've tried App Inventor, and it's nowhere near the quality of buzztouch. You don't *need* to produce for both Android and iPhone, so you don't *need* a Mac, unless you feel that you need an iOS version of the app. And if you have a phone, the email install should work just fine. gracefullydone, i've tried many websites that can create an app for you but, there is no site like bt and more imp you get complete source code here at the bt which you wont get at any of those websites. So i sincerely ask you to stick to bt. If you want me to compile your app i will be pleased to do so, you can contact me at my email: sandeepkurne at gmail dot com. I will surely go through app code and compile next thing in the morning (yes, its already 12.40 am here) and then send it by mail to you which you can check on your phone. Another option i can post it on dropbox for you.

Wow, you guys are my app angels! Thank you for your dedications to help out others! I'm going to try GoNorthWest's e-mail option and other things. If nothing works and I feel like I'm going to die, I will e-mail my code to you Sandeep. Hopefully, I can figure this out. Thanks for helping this newbie out.

@ Sandeep, Yea! Buzztouch has such a great community. I'm also writing a paper in addition to making an app, and I talked extensively about how great online support system BT has. I will be sure to mention you guys!

I'd be interested in reading that paper. Personally, I can't think of a technology/site that has excited me more than buzztouch...and I think my participation in the forums proves that! What @David and his team has done here is nothing short of monumental and, literally, revolutionary. So many other sites let you create apps, but not with the level of control and freedom that you have with buzztouch. I was watching the iOS Learning Path videos the other day, and it really hit me just what @David has done for us all. People who can barely use their computers are publishing apps...that's just amazing! Mark

@GoNorthWest I agree! I don't know about app codes or anything. I only love using apps, but I manage to get this far because of BT, which is amazing. I'm writing about a paper in addition to app project on how apps can be used as educational tools to teach students about media literacy.

No doubt BT is revolutionary and we all owe a lot to David. I totally agree with GoNorthWest on this even a noob with BT and other compiling tools can create a useful app. It's nice to hear your work on that project it would be really helpful for new students and others alike. Looking forward for that.
