? url action pages? where does the data go?

Hi Everyone, I think I have almost found a way to enter a 'text box' code into the custom html text screen here in buzztouch. The generator I used wants an 'URL action page'. This is my first time doing an app so the language can be confusing. I have the look of the box that I want...but where does the 'data' go after someone types in the box? I would love any help!

Hi Ashley, Basically, for what you're trying to do, this is how it needs to work: * User opens up the screen that contains the "text box," which is more specifically a text box in a web form. * Users types in the information and hit the Submit button. * The information is sent to a server somewhere, or a script is executed, using the URL in the action tag (which is where you are having difficulty) * That script or whatever is process with the information you send it, and a result returned to the user. In a nutshell, when you hit the Submit button, the information has to be sent somewhere, and something done with it. In a lot of cases, you'll have a PHP script that runs on your GoDaddy server that takes the information, for example, and posts it to a database. That's what I would expect to happen in your case. And then you could add a screen that, when a person touches it, sends a request to the database to extract the info previously entered. So...this is a way long way of saying that you need some sort of script, on the server side, to process the information (assuming you don't use something like Javascript). Until you get that in place, the user will hit the button, and nothing will happen. The action tag needs to tell the form what to do with the data. Does that make sense? Email me if you need more examples! Mark

Thanks mark- i'll ponder that one! Is there a way to save the information in the app itself?

To save data you have various options: SQlite Local Storage - device memory External Storage - SD card Website The other thread is about using local storage, referred to as cache.

Oh, by the way. To enhance your user experience iOS apps may not work with iOS 5.1 As of iOS 5.1 the above answer is no longer valid. Apple has decided to move the localstorage location into a cache folder which can be emptied anytime.

Hi Ashley, There are ways to save to the device itself, but it's not as simple as the bullet items Fred proposes. Yes, iOS comes with SQLite running, but learning how to access and save to it has proven elusive in these forums. It'll require extra coding. iDevices don't have an SD card, so that won't work for you. Yep, you can save to cache, but cache by it's nature is designed to be temporary for faster access to information, and thus can be purged. And again, you need extra coding to write from a screen to the cache, and then retrieve it again later. Your best strategy, I think, would be to set up a mySQL database on your web server, and use a PHP script to send the form information to the database. You can use the device UUID as the "user name" or something, and that can be used to retrieve the information when the person brings up the screen. It would actually be pretty easy, and I can help you with that. It would require the user be connected to the network. Mark

Hi Ashley, You've totally got me thinking of how to do this via HTML and PHP. It might take a few days, but I'm gonna try and whip something up for you. Does GoDaddy offer you a mySQL database and PHP? Mark
