180 Java problems marked RED! Eclipse 3.7.1 64bit

Hi everyone Please forgive me if I missed this in another post. I have been trying for 2 days to get eclipse to run my project. No luck. Maybe I missed something. What I have installed : 1) Eclipse 3.7.1 64bit 2) Android 2.2 3) Google API 2.2 4) Java is installed and tested 5) SDK Manager What i get : http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q551/afrikazaber/Capture.png I also don't have an option to import Android projects. I can't even run the demo project 'hellofred' from myskulla's blog. Dont know whats wrong! Anybody have any ideas? Would really appreciate! Thanks

What version is your app? 1.4? 1.5? or 2.0?? You may need a different google API depending on your app.

Hi gentleman Thank you for the swift reply. I built a v2.00 app, the latest and recommended setting for new buzztouch users. I will try to fix the compliance errors as advised. One thing still bothers me though : in the tutorial videos I see that android projects are listed under the import menu. My eclipse does NOT show that. I can only create a new android project. Maybe this reveals something. I will revert bacl soonest after I applied the compliance fix. Thank you again!

What I have installed : 1) Eclipse 3.7.1 64bit 2) Android 2.2 -you won't need this. 3) Google API 2.2 - use for BTv 1.5 & BTv 2.0 4) Java is installed and tested 5) SDK Manager 6) I assume that you have ADT also. Read The Android Process in my guide. Fred

Hi @afrikazaber, Fred beat me to it, but you also need the Eclipse ADT Plugin installed as well. Page 14 of this wonderful, step-by-step, illustrated guide shows you how: http://www.buzztouch.com/resources/Setting_Up_Your_Android_Development_Environment_v1.3.pdf Also, the first set of errors you get can be resolved by fixing your project properties. Check out this document: http://www.buzztouch.com/resources/Common_Android_Errors_and_Solutions_v1.0.pdf Mark

Hi @afrikazaber, Awe, come on, be honest...the process sucks! Getting the Eclipse environment up and running is way, way, way more difficult than it needs to be. Too many pieces that don't fit together well. I'm brainstorming ways to make it easier, so hopefully I'll come up with something. But congratulations on sticking through it...any chance to learn something new is a good thing! Mark

Did you do the Fix Project properties thing that I sent you in the other document? That's part of it for sure. Mark

It sucks because it's not a dedicated development platform like xcode. Eclipse is used for developing in multiple languages and requires multiple plugins to extend it. Android development is just a series of 3rd party plugins. Maybe your brainstorming should head towards a dedicated environment Mark? Fwiw an experienced developer friend of mine quickly dumped eclipse and went to netbeans for Android projects, he finds it much quicker, more stable, less resource heavy and consistant.

Agreed...Eclipse in itself is an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) that can be used for many different types of projects. It's indeed the Android extensions here that are problematic. My approach is going to be trying to figure out a way to automate the whole install. But, I think I'll also check out Netbeans and see what can be done there. There is no hard requirement to use Eclipse. Mark

Alright. I have included some screenshots for those of you who are still interested in this. I have changed the Java Builder compliance settings to 1.5. Still, when I open my app I get loads of errors. See the screen shots here : http://s1163.photobucket.com/albums/q551/afrikazaber/ I hope they are in order. They are named step1 , step2 etc if it is not :) ps Still can get the 'Hello Fred" app to work either. When I open it I get LOADS of errors and NO workspace screen. It is like it doesn't even want to open at all.

Hi @afrikazaber, According to those screenshots, you have the correct Google APIs installed, so that's not the problem. The best way I've found to get my project into Eclipse is to do an Import...Import Existing Project, and then select it as you do. Do not create a new Android Project, and do not import an Archive File. Those never seem to work for me. Also...so you can see your project once you import it, go to Window...Show View...Package Explorer. That'll allow you to see all the files. There are other views there you can pick to show as well. Try some of this and let us know what happens! Mark

Mark, I beg to differ. I don't see Google 2.2 API Level 8 I see Google 2 , perhaps the .2 is not displaying but until shown otherwise I would assume 2 is not 2.2. Fred

Hi Fred, I beg to differ with your beg to differ! Check out the first image he's got at this link: http://s1163.photobucket.com/albums/q551/afrikazaber/ The very first image shows "Installed" next to the Google section of Android 2.2 (API8). Mark

Yes I see it under Android 2.2. In my SDK Manager it displays 2.2 not 2, which is why I didn't say it wasn't installed, but now I been shown otherwise. Fred
