I'm Baffled... Menu button woes

Hey everyone - I'm new to the boards so first off I wanted to say hello... here's my question though - I've made my menu (grid, size:230, text under icon), yet I can't get the icons centered on the screen. If I increase the padding then the user will have to scroll in order to get to the bottom icons. If I make the icons smaller then they are all pushed to the top left of the screen as if they are in a table all being moved at once. How can I edit the menu icons so that I can make them smaller and center them in the screen?? This is driving me insane! Thanks!

Let us know how it works out. I gave up trying to do any custom button work for Android, because there are so many different screen sizes, and it was literally impossible to do anything that looked good on everything. At least with Apple there are only two sizes - iPhone and iPad! Anyway...interested to hear what you come up with to solve that problem! Mark

that just put them all in a straight line vertically down the screen causing me to have to scroll to see them, although they are centered.... I have six icons that I wanted centered in a grid pattern on the screen so that they are all visible without scrolling, if that makes sense

More out of curiosity than having an answer...what device or screen size are you currently designing for?

I'm using a Motorola Atrix2 for testing 4.3" screen by default, and I'm developing for Android. It just seems as if there's no possible way to center any buttons. It's clearly not like .css, which is what I'm used to. I'm definitely a beginner though, so I'm open to advice!

Using the settings available in the control panel, your options are somewhat limited. If you poke around the source code that came with your download, you might be able to tweak things that way. Or... You could create an HTML page as your "button menu," and use CSS/HTML to your hearts content to design that interface. Then intercept the tap on the button and have it link to a different screen. A bit more advanced, but can be done. Here's an article from the founder of buzztouch that might help: http://www.buzztouch.com/resources/intercepting-menu-taps.pdf Mark

I was actually considering making my main menu an html document and using .css - at least then I could customize it any way I see fit. Seeing as how you just mentioned it, I'm thinking that may be the route to go!

By using different res you have alternative size buttons for different devices. Res > drawable Res > large screen Res > small screen res > Xlarge screen Res > you makeup screen

Hey Fred, The issue I'm having isn't with the button sizes - it's with their placement on the screen. I just can't seem to get them centered. Are you saying that by placing the icons in a different folder I would be able to control their placement based on the button's size? I can send you a screenshot to show you what I'm talking about if you'd like. Thanks again!

Yes, it seems you want two rows with three icons. For a row with 5 icons I use 65 For 4 I use 95 ? You need to experiment Screen rotation is a problem. Fred

You may not need different res, just enter different size setting for different size screens.

That would be correct - two rows each with three icons. I've finally got it so that they are all centered.........now the issue is moving them down on the screen (if that's even a possibility.) I understand im not using html/css here, so I'm a little lost. Thanks for the patience

You might be able to do so. requires coding, haven't done it that's why might. Go to the NavBar section of the .xml file. First check Advance propertiesto see of there's a setting, don't remember one. Fred
