Should I upgrade OS and download xcode ?

Hi Guys, I am really really new here and need to ask your advice please. I'm not a programmer, I'm trying to do this for myself. I understand some HTML and can build the basics...but... I am on a MacBook Pro running the Snow Leopard OS (which is brill!). I've had it for two years now. I want to download xcode, but have to upgrade the OS to Lion to get the latest version of xcode. Feedback on various Forums is that Lion is not good, and Apple (in their Wisdom!) don't seem to be doing much about it. Also apparently (feedback on App Store) the latest version of xcode is really buggy... Should I go for it and upgrade/download as most of the stuff written is just hype, or is it really glitchy and not worth doing? Is there somewhere I can download an older version of xcode? Thanks guys - I use my MacBook for my own business and I don't want to mess it up. Cheers, Gary

From my point of view you can install the new lion and update the xcode. The problems were with the previous version.

Lion's not terrible. if you have older programs in Snow leopard, you may lose them. I had to upgrade my microsoft office to the newest. I also am not a programmer but with Buzztouch, and the newest version of xcode everything is going pretty smooth. Just read the how-to's and scour this forum and everything should go smooth for you. Oh, dont be afraid to ask either, the people here at Buzztouch are the best. They have seriously helped me 110%!

Xcode 4.2 runs fine on Snow Leopard. Lion is a pretty buggy OS upgrade, I'm avoiding it for now. You'll want to upgrade to Xcode 4 from Xcode 3 just for the Automatic device provisioning feature among many other things. I don't think you'll be able to run the iOS 5 SDK's in XCode 3 for much longer, Apple wants you using Xcode 4. There are links once you login to your Apple Developer to download all versions of Xcode. You can run Xcode 3 and 4 on the same system too. I keep 3 installed, but find i never use it FWIW. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5392855/can-i-run-xcode-3-and-xcode-4-at-the-same-time

Of course it also depends heavily on what software you have on your test device. If you have upgraded to 5,1 you HAVE to have the latest version of xcode which means you must have Lion. My issue with upgrading to Lion now is that Mountian Lion is due out in the summer. If you have 5 you can can run an old version of xcode 4, if you have 4,3 you can run xcode 3 which many developers started with. I liked 3 but 4 is miles better. Regards.

My suggestion is to keep Snow Leopard, install 4.2 xcode and update the xcode sdk to 5.1. Thats the setup we have at work and I have that on my personal mac book pro. Tested and works:)

I 100% agree with @coderx. I'm using Snow Leopard with Xcode 4.2 and SDK 5.0. I've read of tons of problems with Lion and the latest version of Xcode. So, I'd recommend sticking with what works. Mark

Hi Guys, Thank you soooo much for your help with this. I tried to download the latest version of xcode, but the itunes store said it could not install the programme as I was running the older OS. I'm not sure where to find the older versions to download, but will start looking. if I can't find it, I might just wait for Mountain Lion and go from there. Thanks again for all your help - its impressive. Cheers, Gary
