iOS download

dose anybody know how I can place an iOS app on my own web page so clients can download their app without having to place it in the apple store. My app is a URL connection and apple says no way. I have not figured out how to pull data from a data base so until i do i must use URL links. Can someone give me a work around so my clients can have iOS apps. Thanks

Well, the solution to this would involve your customers jailbreaking their phones, which is probably not something they are willing to do. Or, they could all switch to Android, which allows you to ship absolutely any app via email! What do you mean when you say your app is a URL connection? Do you mean it's more like a web app than a true app that takes advantage of iOS features? Mark

yes, I have android apps pointing to mobile web sites. So they are just a means to access a mobile site with a custom URL. I heard apple does not allow such a thing and have read it in my developers account. I have not learned anything about Xcode yet. I thought I would ask about a work around. I think I will have to roll up my sleeves and get into the next phase of learning. Thank you for the response Mark. Jailbreaking is not the way to go. What about provisioning an app for test marketing? Does Apple do a review of apps that are testing. I think this is a 2 year test period. I have to go read up on it. Any thoughts on that? Joe

Hi Joe, Apple for sure frowns on any app that is just a collection of web links of web clippings. They figure a Web App is more suited for that, and I would agree. If you can access the majority of your content using Mobile Safari, why create an app?! Jailbreaking, in my view, is not a viable method in any circumstance...unless you ultimately want to irk Apple. Yeah, it may be "legal" in the eyes of the courts, but do you really want to ask your customers to do that? There are ways to provision for test marketing. Appflight.com is one alternative. Apple does not review any of these apps...only the ones that are submitted into iTunes. You can also do ad hoc testing, where you can allow certain devices to test the app via iTunes. It's all on the Apple Developer Account area. Hope this helps! Mark
