Changing Self-hosted host seamlessly

Hi guys, My hosting company (run by a friend, not the most reliable, I know) is closing up shop soon, so I'm going to need to transfer my BT server onto another hosting provider. As I have a number of apps that use my BT Server, I want to get the transition as seamless as possible. I was wondering if anyone has experience in switching hosts- if you use a cPanel backup, restore the files, databases etc, and wait for your domain name to propagate, should everything be fine? Thanks // J

I switched mine to a new host. Did everything just like you said. Export the sql database then import it into the new host. There were a couple of entries to change, so that it would work. Somewhere in the sql database my old (original) website was listed. I had to manually go in and change these to my new website, and everything worked perfect. And when I copied the files folder, its permissions changed, so I changed them back. It took 15 minutes for my domain name to propagate, and everything worked as it should. I rebuilt the apps recently to reflect the new website, which is always a good idea.

I have a pretty decent background in hosting and moving hosts. The cPanel (full) backup should be fine. I'd also grab the SQL backups from cPanel before you totally abandon your existing host, just in case. If you're moving to another cPanel host, they will often offer to do a full account move from inside WHM (web host manager). This works pretty good. As far as configuration changes, if your databases were looking for localhost before, it shouldn't be a problem. Only if somewhere was pointing to IP addresses would there be a problem. Another thing to check is the API key here at BuzzTouch. If I remember, they changed it to only worry about your hostname, not your IP, so it should be fine. Good luck!
