Eclipse and Android SDK setup assistance

To whom ever reads, I have spent the last 10 hours or so trying to get Eclipse and Android SDK to function properly. I have looked at Mark's tutorial and the learning videos in buzztouchU. I did everything Mark's tutorial said to do and everything downloaded. Only problem is I do not have a Android Project in the new section. I have stuff that is different than other things people have listed. The tools appear to be downloaded and everything but I cannot get my project on the eclipse. I would like it if someone could take me step by step to see what i have done wrong or if my computer is just messing up. I have skype, email, and unlimited minutes on my phone as long as its a cell phone. I'm trying to enjoy this but I'm burnt out and feel as if I will never get anywhere. I've looked at several topics in the forums and nothing is helping. I know this is the last thing some of you would want to do but I would be beyond in your debt and grateful for your help.

Hi @JasonProvince, Welcome to buzztouch! I totally feel your pain. I wrote those tutorials because it was way more difficult to do the Eclipse setup than I thought it should be. In many cases the tutorial works just fine, but for some reason, in other cases, it doesn't. I would be more than happy to get your configuration all worked out via TeamViewer if you would like. Just send me an email at MrkFleming at gmail dot com, and we'll arrange a time to make it work! Mark

An alternative use my Installing Eclipse Guide. www.myskylla.com Plus there's a link to the best video explaining the process that I've seen. Fred

@fred, could you put direct links in your posts? I spend too much time searching your site for what I'm looking for. Sometimes I find it, sometimes I don't! Good for your serps and traffic stats but bad for my patience!

I see I am not the only one having this difficulty. Look forward to getting it solved myself. If not.. pencil me in for a teamviewer session as well. LOL.

@raveyd, direct links are not practical, and I understand about the problem. You'll notice I've changed the structure of the guide allowing for a better index and Table of Contents plus divisions that emphasis subject matter. I'm in the process of re writing a few posts. Thanks for the feedback. Fred

Don't give up JasonProvince and ncc6206. I've just started this app development thing myself and getting the Eclipse/Android stuff in place does take a huge effort. Every time you think you've got it, there's just one more thing to do (which takes just shy of forever to figure out how to do). Having Mark go in and help you remotely is probably the easiest thing to do but you could also try scouring Youtube for tutorials and stuff. I used a few videos from there plus some pages from developer.android.com. When you are looking for help, make sure you know what version of Eclipse you are using and what version of the Android SDK you are using. Those are usually the first couple of questions you'll be asked when looking for help, I've found. It's a bit like walking through a strange house in complete darkness but good luck with it.

"It's a bit like walking through a strange house in complete darkness but good luck with it" - so true! Standing offer to anybody about doing TeamViewer to get things up and running. Just PM or Email me. Can't really strike up a conversation on the phone at the same time, because I generally do these things when the family is asleep, and we have a small house, but we can communicate via email during the session. It's usually just a small item that's blocking people from moving forward! Mark

Argh! I simply don't understand why setting up the Android dev environment has to be so darn complicated! Argh! OK...end of rant. I'm not sure exactly why it's doing that, nor what the answer is, but here are some things to try: * Make sure Eclipse is closed when you install the Android SDK Manager * Right click the install package and select "Run As Administrator" * Reboot your machine I have found that having Eclipse open while installing things in the SDK Manager tends to cause problems. So, I'd start with making sure that's closed. You can double-click SDK Manager executable from the C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\ folder to start the manager. Mark

@Mark - Is that the extent of your rant?! Mine almost sent my laptop out of the window! Those access denied look like windows 7? Run as admin sounds like a good call.

@raveyd : I have those sort of "servers out the window" rants so frequently at work that there's not much left for Android! Sometimes technology is just so darn frustrating!

Finally forced to stop lurking and make my first post on this thread, as I share the sense of frustration! I'm tasked with trying to get the process wrapped up in a bunch of WiX scripts to make MSI installer files for a group of interested people at work, which is adding to the enjoyment! The whole process has been an education (not in a good way), but can I just say thanks to GoNorth's guide it has been very useful. If I do ever emerge from the other side of this act of folly I shall report back, but I'm not sure on the legality of passing the resulting MSI files on. (Maybe I should send the WiX scripts to Google, as it seems they could really do with a bit more time spent on the SDK deployment!)

Hi @redfox, Welcome to buzztouch! I'm totally interested in what you come up with for scripting the install. I did some investigation into that...didn't make it too far because of other things, but figured there had to be a way to make the process so much easier than it is. It's really just about installing several components...that should be pretty darn easy to script. If you can post your results here, that would be awesome! Mark

I will do! Like you say it’s definitely doable, although I wouldn't go as far as 'darn easy'! The fact that the SDK is about a gigabyte and close on 30,000 files, when you have the main platforms downloaded, means that it takes 25 minutes for the MSI to build before I can test it! However, I do have it sort of working (as well as another MSI for eclipse) but they both need a more work yet.

I believe this will have to be the case. I installed all the features and packages and then loaded Eclipse but still not showing Android under any of the projects.

Hi Dragon007, The tutorial is only downlevel on Eclipse a couple levels...but that should not cause an issue at all. If you'd like me to TeamViewer and get things set up for you, just let me know. Otherwise, post where you're stuck, and we'll get through it. Mark

Hi All, Firstly thank you for providing such a fantastic Development platform for code idiots like me. But I’m already stuck :( II have followed Mark's installation guide but I am coming up with 2 errors while doing the installation of "installer_r15-windows" 1. "adb kill-server failed - run manually if necessary" don’t think this is the critical one. 2. "SDK Manager: Failed to install - Failed to rename dir c:\and...... to c:\and..\temp\toolpackage.old01 Mark, if this is an easy fix, I would really appreciate your help on TeamViewer if possible. Any time that is convenient for you, Message me and I will make sure I am available at that time for you. Many thanks Tim

Hi Tim, I've seen this error quite a few times, and I've found no reliable fix. You can try to make sure Eclipse is shut down (maybe reboot?), and then try the install again. Also try right clicking on the .exe and running as Administrator. Finally...try deleting the c:\and...\temp directory, and then doing the install again. If those ideas don't work, let me know. Mark

ARRRRRRGGGHHH! Frustration would be a sizeable understatement, got all the bits downloaded, now I have an error message about a folder failed to be moved, turn off anti-virus (which I did) still got the same error....pleeeease help as my supply of computer patience is wearing thin and the vodka bottle beckons. GoNorthWest, what's the deal with team viewer, that would be really helpful if we could set that up! Cheers, Steve

In my experience, the folder failing to move happens when the installer attempts to move the tools folder while upgrading from R15 to R19. It seems to occur because the batch file that the Google selected to do this actually resides in the tools folder itself! I watched it happen with process monitor. You are not alone, the issue has been reported on Google’s developer forums many times with seemingly no action on their part. If you want to dig inside the android folders you can copy the files across yourself, but it is a pain. It was this issue that convinced me to create my own MSI files to deal with the deployment (as mentioned above). Unfortunately work pressures mean this is taking longer than hoped, but I am still working on it.

Hi Steve, I totally agree with @redfox. What I ended up doing was uninstalling R15 and then installing R19 and the APIs I needed. That worked with no issues at all. Mark
