what sizes to choose when working with images?

Hello, my app is going to be about photography. It is very important for me to get the sizes right and for the images to look its best. I want to add a header image in each screen, however i am finding it very difficult to choose what size to use. I want a sort of panoramic photo on the header that goes from side to side no spaces no border. What is the best size to choose for a small device? so it will always look the same in whichever device? and what would be the best size for the large device, ipads, tablets etc. Any suggestions would be much apreciate it! many thanks, iggy

Hi Iggy, I'd recommend you spend some time in the Apple Developer Program material learning about their recommendations for image sizes and quality. That assumes, of course, that we're talking about iOS apps. They offer lots of good advice, and they are the experts on their products! For Android, it's anybody's guess. There are so many different devices with different screen sizes and resolutions, that it's going to be pretty tough to work with. Google is probably your friend in this case. Mark

Thanks Mark, I will do that! I am first preparing the app for android and then go into the iphone and ipad, as I need to take the mac from work to my house to get that done. It is really hard to work with android coz there are so many choices and what could look good in one device might not look good on another. Is that right? I am talking about images as I guess the design will look similar in all devices? I guess its a bit of guessing work? I will look into Google and try and get something that works in all devices. I just need to make sure that all devices show the images to its best. I got some research to do. I think I am ready to do the app, but I want to get my first page perfect with all that I want and then the rest will be easy applying the same settings to most of the screens. Its a bit tricky haha, I keep getting errors on eclipse and so on. It will take a bit of time but I am really excited about it.

Hi, I found this on the android developers website: xlarge screens are at least 960dp x 720dp large screens are at least 640dp x 480dp normal screens are at least 470dp x 320dp small screens are at least 426dp x 320dp I am looking to get the photos on my app to look as similar as possible in all devices. So do you think I should use the xlarge screen size as a reference when deciding on photos etc? will it then resize the images when using a smaller resolution device? Is that how you work out image sizes? It is easier with iphone but with android I am so confused on what image sizes to use.

I'm not an image guru, but I think designing with larger resolution screens in mind, and then hoping they scale down we'll for the smaller resolutions, is the way to go.

PNG or GIF are usually better for there scaling qualities. Ive jsut managed to to test a full moving slideshow in an app using the AVD this worked absolutly fine i just scaled the sldieshow size down in the custom html from 650px X 300px To 300px X 300px n at tht it works perfectly and fits on screen
