Are QR codes dead?

Are QR codes a thing of the past or are they still viable? Are you using these in/for your app, business, or other things? Please share your thoughts and how you use (or would like to use) them. Barry

In the UK, they never really took off. They used to be everywhere, but in reality no-one scans them.

I used to use them on flyers / posters to get people to help drive downloads of a local business app from the app stores. I concluded some people were curious and scanned them, but take-up was not great. But I would do it again, it doesn't cost anything.

I would like to say majority of the world's iOS population don't even have a QR reader app on their phone. I've never been big for QR codes, but I do see the benefit factor for them.

In Asia, the Messaging apps have QR-scanners built into them. The Messaging apps get used the most on Android and iOS devices. Everything in Asia has a QR-code on it. The usage of QR-codes in Asia is tremendous. However, in the rest-of-the-world, the usage of QR-codes is dramatically low. Sadly, within the US, the best usage of QR-codes is as a Treasure Hunt, where the Users will be motivated to download a scan-capable app. -- Niraj

I was at a dinner last night at GoDaddy, and GoDaddy had links to resources in QR codes printed on each table. I guess I didn't see anyone scanning them, so I am not sure the tactic worked. I would rather scan a QR code than type in a long URL.

They aren't dead. Are they perhaps on life support? Perhaps. I know a lot of realtors still use them, it seems to work in that environment quite well. They had a lot of buzz but the adoption never really flourished. There is still a small section of marketers that is them and use them well. Can't remember the exact figures but I'm sure it was less than 5% of smartphone users actually scanned a QR code last year. 5% of 150million users is still a decent number though. As always with these things, demographics and implementation are the deciding factor. If done well and in context they can be useful. On a billboard on the side of the motorway - where I'm doing 90mph - telling me to "scan this for money off" isn't going to work.

In japan, they're all over. I never actually cared for them; no telling where they will take you. But they're not dead; they just haven't tipped yet world wide. Cheers! -- Smug
