I can't even get Eclipse to open

Hi, My boss wanted me to try developing apps for our business so I found my way to Buzztouch but I've already run into a problem practically before getting started. I downloaded Eclipse and extracted it onto my computer and I downloaded the Java SDK but when I try to open Eclipse, I get the following messag: "A Java Runtime Environment or Java Development Kit must be available to run Eclipse. No Java virtual machine was found after searching the following locations: M:My Documentseclipse-jreinjavaw.exe javaw.exe in your current PATH" I've tried downloading Eclipse numerous times and extracting the files to numerous different places but it always comes up with the same error message. I'm running Windows 7 at 64-bit. As you may have guessed, I have zero (less than zero if that's possible) developing experience. Thanks.

Hi, thanks for the response but as mentioned in my previous post, the JDK is already installed on my computer. Any other suggestions?

Hi @Ag-Chieve, Did you follow the steps in the document? If you do, you should at least be able to get Eclipse to open! Also...do you have the 64-bit version of Eclipse installed? That would be the preferable one to use. And, are you using Eclipse Classic (Indigo), or some other version? Mark

Hi for me what i did was i started by installing JDk , then i installed eclipse and finally Android SDk. I run into some problems at first trying to configure the android SDK with Eclipse. so i uninstalled everything and started the process all again with help for youtube. Am a complete newbie so If you have time you can start all over again and follow a video tutorial like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIL1UouA4dE. hope i was helpful.

Hi Mark, I hadn't seen this document until a few minutes ago so I had already installed Eclipse indigo (eclipse-jee-indigo-SR2-win32-x86_64.zip is the exact file I downloaded). I had also downloaded the Android SDK yesterday prior to downloading the Java SDK, which I downloaded today. So, as you can see, I did not download the programs in the order specified in the document. I'm on the verge of just deleting everything and starting over again. What makes things more confusing is that in the document it claims that the Android SDK wouldn't download without first installing the Java SDK but I did not find that to be the case.

Thanks for the tip jaymo83. Youtube tutorials have walked me through many a process and I might just get rid of everything and head over there now.

I agree with starting from scratch. Setting up the Android dev environment is a bit tricky sometimes, but if you follow the steps in the doc, you should be OK. It's the steps I and many others have used! Mark

Well, I'm on company time with no current deadline so starting from scratch is not a problem. I'll let you know once I get everything sorted out. (That might be a matter of weeks, though.)

Hi @Fred, If he has a 64-bit OS, it's actually better to use the 64-bit version of any software that's available, because it's been optimized for 64-bit. Yep, he could use 32-bit for sure, but would be missing out on any 64-bit goodness...like access to more memory...that would be gone by not having it installed. Mark

Actually for Eclipse the 32 bit version is recommen. I'll post the reference when I come across it again. You. sometimes will run into problems with the 64 bit version. Don't remember the specific problem but this might be it. Fred

Update; I followed the Youtube tutorial linked by jaymo83 and managed to get Eclipse installed and opening. Now all I have to do is wait for my head to stop spinning and start having fun with all this app stuff. Thanks for everybody's help.

Perhaps this? http://grekai.wordpress.com/2011/07/14/working-with-eclipse-windows-7-64-bit-problem/ Not knowing that there existed a problem with the 64-bit version, my comment was about using 64-bit software on a 64-bit OS in general. But, yeah, if there is an outstanding issue, then 32-bit would surely be the way to go. Mark

Hi Ag-Chieve, Does that mean you have the right Google APIs already downloaded and installed? And the Emulator created (assuming you will be using one for testing purposes)? Android SDK Manager is all good to go? If so...congrats! And have fun with development! Mark

All of the tools et cetera are being downloaded now. This is a crazy amount of stuff to go through to create just one app. I'll have to make about 20 just to have made all this worthwhile. I now understand the importance of relationships between developers. Thanks again for the help every one.

Yeah, Android certainly puts us through the paces just for the "privilege" of submitting an app! At least everything is free, except the merchant account at Google Play if you decide to sell an app. But, truth be told, Apple and iOS have just as many problems. And I agree, it's great to have a good relationship with other developers! Let us know how things go! Mark
