2 Apps Approved So Far, 1 Slapped Down

So in my first month I've had my first two apps approved instantly: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ultimate-birds/id507457749?ls=1&mt=8 & http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/adele-ultimate-quiz/id507134878?ls=1&mt=8 I mainly did these as tests to go through the process and get a feel for how it all works. Both related to projects that I had on at the time in a different medium, so I re-packaged some of the content in app form. Both charged at 99c, I've had 43 buys in just over a month, which I guess is ok considering they're pretty basic and there's absolutely no marketing/promotion. It was enough to spur me on to do a much more involved and time-consuming app for my third, which I considered my first 'proper' one. It got rejected for really spurious reasons, which was maddening but I've re-submitted so hope that gets resolved. The experience so far has led me to ponder a few questions: 1. My apps are ios but Andriod is potentially a bigger market, would I do better on Andriod and should I focus on re-versioning my existing apps for Andriod or plough ahead with new ios ones that I have planned? 2. What's the best way of marketing to drive up the numbers, ideally into 100 or so per day? 3. Would I be better off doing freemium apps or stick with the paid and focus on better promotion? 4. I see that many of you set-up promo codes to pass out to reviewers etc, how do I do that?

Hi @eespverbatic, Congratulations on your success! That's pretty cool! With respect to Android, my feeling is that you'll run into more issue, and have less people buying the app, than if you stick with iOS. What I've heard from others is that Android users tend to want more free stuff than iOS users, and there are also literally hundreds of devices that your app could get installed on, which makes support and development somewhat difficult. I would develop for both, but if you had to focus on one or another, I would focus on iOS. Twitter, Facebook and Google+ are all good ways to get your app awareness out. There are also tons of app review sites...a quick Google site will locate many. I have an app that has a Lite version and a Full version. I get tons of downloads for the Lite version, and few conversions to the Full version. So, thee freemium vs. paid is hard to say. What it really boils down to is content and coolness of your app! If you go into iTunes Connect, and go into your app, you can get promo codes. Just poke around. Mark

Nice work on getting two approved! Don't let a rejection get you down. I went back and forth several times with Apple before my first one was approved. I think if you ask around that is the norm. Just have to keep pushing forward. Of the people I know, very few have bought apps on their droid devices. Most just download the free apps. This may change now with google play, the newer phones / tablets, and all the marketing Google is doing, but like was stated before you may want to focus on IOS if you have to pick just one. Jim

I agree with Jim, my app that is free has had about 1000 downloads in a month. link here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.guidetosafescouting&feature=search_result However the one i charge 1.99 for has had only 5 downloads. link here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thescoutmasterminute&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS50aGVzY291dG1hc3Rlcm1pbnV0ZSJd Both have high ratings, the paid is a "5" and the free is "4.8". I may drop the price and see what happens buyt in my experience, droid users want it free...

Thanks for all the comments guys. ASusoeff, are you running ads through your free app? If so, at a 1000 downloads per month isn't this a pretty good model?
