strange html behavior with quotes and apostrophes

hey guys. anybody getting strange behavior when using quotes or apostrophes? I am working on an app using v2.0. The app is mostly a reference guide so it has many html screens and while some pages look correct, like this: "it is somebody's job to do it" others look like this: /"it is somebody/'s job to do it/" I have checked the source html and it looks fine. but i get all the forward slashes before a character on some pages but other i don't. Any ideas?

When night ends... How can we determine the hour of dawn - when the night ends and the day begins?\" the rabbi asked of his students. \"When, from a distance, you can distinguish between a dog and a sheep?\" one of his students suggested. \"No\" the rabbi answered. \"Is it when you can distinguish between a fig tree and a grapevine?\" another student asked. \"No\" he replied. \"Please tell us the answer, then\" said the students. \"It is when you can look into the face of a human being and have enough light to recognize in him your brother,\" the wise teacher replied. \"Until then, it is night, and the darkness is still with us.\" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Everybody‘s Canoe... A young Indian brave was busy at work carving a canoe out of a log. As he worked, members of the tribe passed by. Everybody had a piece of advice to offer the young man. \"I think you are making your canoe too wide,\" one of them said. The young brave, wishing to show respect for the advice of an elder, narrowed down the canoe. A little later, another warrior stopped by. \"I‘m afraid you are cutting the stern too full,\" he said. Again, the young brave listened to his elder and cut down the stern. Very soon, yet another member of the tribe stopped, watched awhile, then said, \"The bow is too sheer.\" The young brave accepted this advice as well and changed the line of the bow. Finally the canoe was complete and the young brave launched it. As soon as it hit the water, it capsized. Laboriously he hauled it back onto the beach. Then he found another log and began to work anew. Very soon, a member of his tribe stopped by to offer some advice, but this time the young brave was ready. \"See that canoe over there? \" he asked, pointing to the useless craft on the beach. \"That is everybody‘s canoe.\" Then he nodded at the work in progress. \"This one,\" he said, \"is my canoe\" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ten Commandments of Human Relations. note that some of the text gets the / and some doesn't...there does not seem to be a rhyme or reason to it.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason! Shouldn't they be backward slashes to escape double quotes? Have you tried using single quotes?

Hey @ASusoeff, Are you by any chance pasting the text in from any sort of word processing program like MS Word or any other program that does it's own formatting? If so, you may be introducing weirdness that way. Best thing is to paste text into a simple text editor like Notepad, then copy again and paste into your HTML. That might help. Mark

hey @GoNorthWest. I tried taking the text from the source to dreamweaver to v2.0 and still got the issues. I tried pasting the html from dreamweaver as well as the finished text from dreamweaver, still go the issues. Didn't try regular "flat" text like from notepad, but GADS that would be aweful tedious given the size of the App. The really weird part is this. I could take html code that is correct, put it in v2.0, save it, look at it as text in v2.0 and it looked good. Then I refresh the phone and it looks good too. Then I work on another screen and when I come back to the first screen like magic **poof** it now has all the forward slashes before quotes and apostrophes. I finally got to that point of fustration (I'm sure you have thought the same thing) where I prayed that my computer would turn into a human so I could choke the living S*&t outa it for being a pain and not listening to me and doing what i told it to do...lol. Typically that is a "walk away and get a cold adult beverage" point for me... Went back to v1.5 and started from scratch and it seems to be working. Could it be I have found some sort of bug within v2.0? Or perhaps my browser settings on IE are doing something. Haven't tried building from Chrome or Safari or firefox, maybe that is a possibility.

The backslash is used in strings in javascript and objective C to escape characters like " ' etc (and for line breaks), so \" should show on the phone screen as ". When you see \" on the screen it's like, behind the scenes, the code has added \\" if you see what I mean? Although I don't think that's quite right... I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling the custom html plugin and see if that helps.

Also, I know it's a pain, but as GoNorthWest says, try using notepad or notepad++ to ensure that there are no invalid characters. If only to see if it makes a difference on a file or two.

Thanks Raveyd. What I am doing (and truth be told, what I should have been doing all along as a matter of "good practice") is to build each screen that is to be HTML in dreamweaver. I have a folder called "the apps' name" and am doing all the text by creating html 4.01 transitional web pages. which appears to be what v1.5 and v2.0 uses I then take those pages and paste the <body>...</body> part to the custom HTML in v1.5. So far this is working great. I will try it in v2.0 shortly, but I like your idea of reloading the plugin within v2.0 as well. For the 2 minutes it takes, it would be worth a try. Will post the results when i have them Cheers :)
