Android SDK manager won't load

Hi, Wasn't sure where to post this, but I've installed the Java SDK and installed the Android SDK using the installer_r16-windows.exe file and all went fine. Except when I attempt to run the Android SDK a command prompt window opens for a split second and disappears. Can't get it to run. I'm new at this, so has anyone encountered this? Anyone know how to correct this? I tried Google for a solution, but the ones I found talked about environment variables or something. Any help appreciated. Thanks. Craig

Hi Craig, First thing I do when something like that happens is to reboot the computer. Sometimes a process gets going that won't die, and it prevents things from loading. Next step might be to reinstall the SDK, just to make sure nothing got messed up. Do you also have Eclipse installed? You'll need that if you want to do any development with buzztouch. The SDK is just a plugin to the Eclipse development environment. You may already be aware of this document, but it's a step-by-step guide to getting things up and running: http://www.buzztouch.com/resources/Setting_Up_Your_Android_Development_Environment_v1.3.pdf Let us know if you still have problems! Mark

Hi Mark, Yes, I've been going through that pdf step by step. Everything was going well up until I came upon this problem. Eclipse install was going to be next. I opted to go with this suggestion in the pdf, which is why I don't have eclipse installed yet and noticed this problem : "You can choose to start the SDK Manager at this point, or move on to Eclipse installation. For the sake of this tutorial, keep “Start SDK Manager” selected, and hit Finish. " I'll try your suggestions and see what happens.Thanks. Craig

Well, I rebooted the computer. That didn't work. I uninstalled the Android SDK Tools and re-installed but the problem is still there. Any ideas? Craig

What version of Windows are you using? If it's a new computer..meaning last couple of years...maybe you have 64-bit hardware? Then you'd want to install the 64-bit version of the SDK. Mark

I just discovered that my system says that the java version is 1.6.0_26-b03. Add/remove programs list shows Java 6 installed, so maybe that's the problem. The Java SDK I installed was version 7. Maybe if I uninstalled the Java SDK, then uninstalled the java 6 installations (update7 and update 13), then reinstalled the java SDK, that would fix the problem? Craig

Hi Craig, Another thing to try is right click on the executable for that program, and hit Run as Administrator. Could be some weird permissions problem preventing it from fully loading. Let us know how it goes. We won't rest till you get it working! Mark

Hey @Fred, Do you have a particular solution for this problem? He's already followed the general steps that have worked for most people...so something specific must be going on? I've not been able to find a specific reference in your blog, and I'm very interested in how to fix this issue. Thanks! Mark

Hi Guys, I uninstalled the Java 6 JRE I had on the system and uninstalled the SDK and re-installed the SDK, then checked and this time my system showed the correct java version and the SDK manager window came up. I then followed the pdf setup guide step by step and everything looks good so far, except, now I'm at the part about setting up keystores, and it says that the SDK should have created a debug keystore, but I can't find anything. So I left that part for the moment and went to the next step and set up my workspace folder and then, to configure Eclipse I'm supposed to go to Window > Preferences, and on the window that comes up, expand the Android section on the left, but there's no Android section, lol! Looks like I missed something somewhere. What did I miss? Craig

Hi Craig, Couple more documents to help you out : http://www.buzztouch.com/resources/Signing_Android_Apps_v1.0.pdf http://www.buzztouch.com/resources/Compiling_Your_Android_Application_v1.0.pdf Both step-by-step with illustrations. You can create a keystore at any step of the export process, so nothing to worry about there. Follow the send doc to load your buzztouch source package, and you're on your way! Mark

Fred, Haven't tried creating a project yet. I'm stuck on a particular point. GoNorthWest, Thanks for those links. Appreciate it. Guys, I'm in Eclipse and I'm at the page in "Setting_Up_Your_Android_Development_Environment_v1.1.pdf", that says "Once the workspace has been configured, the main program will come up. You now want to go to Windows > Preferences, and the following screen will display: " I have that window open. Now it says in the pdf : "Now, expand the Android section, and you should see the following screen : " There is no Android section there to expand. I must have missed something somewhere or their would be an "Android" entry on the left side of the window with a "+" button to expand it, but it's not there. Craig

Fred, There's nothing in Eclipse for me to create an Android project. All that is listed is Java Project, Project, and a list of other types, but no Android.

If plugin installed, setup preferences: "Eclipse">"Preferences..." in left column choose "Android"(do not expand list, but choose root element), and first preference will be "SDK Location". From google. Fred

Hi Craig, My bad! There's a checkbox on page 8 of the setting up document that allows you to select Tools. I believe that's what you need in this case. If you install them, and things are well, I'll update the doc. Mark

Hi Craig, Thanks for working through the document! Your experience with it lets me know what I need to improve. I'll make some updates and post them soon! You've overcome one major hurdle on your way to getting an app out...congratulations! Setting up the development environment is way harder than it should be (in my opinion). Now you can get on to the fun stuff! Don't hesitate to post any questions you might have...this community is the best on the Net! Mark

Mark, I found out that I had been following your instructional pdf dated 28 Nov. 2011, and not the most recent one dated Feb of this year. Not sure how I found that one, can't remember, but in the newest one, the section on ADT is there. That's why I missed it. Craig
