problem with release app

I came to work today and tried to upload apk ( after having problems getting on website at home) when we (5th graders) made the app we sideloaded it to my kindle fire and it worked great. After a long break I went back to it so it was on the android market. we re did it changing debuggagle to false. a couple of things happened 1) it said we already had a file I was able to get around this by changing the apk name 2) the size of the file was much smaller then the original My question is Are the release apk files smaller then the debuggable files? any other thoughts why it gave me an error when uploading it Thank you!!!

Yes, the release .apk is smaller. Please note the shouting is by Google: Signing Process The Android build process signs your application differently depending on which build mode you use to build your application. There are two build modes: debug mode and release mode. You use debug mode when you are developing and testing your application. You use release mode when you want to build a release version of your application that you can distribute directly to users or publish on an application marketplace such as Google Play. Strange, it was all uppercase on their site. Fred

Hi @overworkedmom, Glad to see you and your class got an app made! Can you send a link to it so we can check it out? A few things to keep in mind: * You should make it a habit to test all your apps before you publish them. You can use the Emulator to do that if you don't have a real device, or at least send the apk to somebody who can load it and do a basic test to make sure everything is in order. * Don't forget that if you make updates to an app in the market, you must use the same release.keystore you used to sign it the first time, or it will be considered a new app, and users won't be able to upgrade. That means a potential loss of data for your users. * Don't forget to change the versioning of your app as you make subsequent releases (like from v1.0 to v1.1). I'm quite eager to see what your class came up with! Mark

Afterthought: The version of the .apk that you uploaded to the Android Market was signed with the debug key apparently so the signing certificate was such. When you sign with the Release Key you'll have a certificate using the release key. When you update the app on the Android Market if the signing certificate is not identical then the Android Market considers it to be a new app. So, always use release key when uploading to Android Market and make copies of your KeyStore now. Plus safeguard your password. Now! Fred

Sure I would be happy to send it. It is nothing fancy. We are in a competition and the competition was to invent something that would help reduce the bacteria in a specific food item. we chose chicken and the plan was to give people information about how to cook/handle chicken safely. The idea behind the app is everyone is on their phone so it was a quick and conveiant way to get info anyway I was able to uplad the apk Thank you both. Now Im stuck because I need screen shots? Now the eclipse is giving me errors ( the same ones I got in the begining) Its late so I will deal in the am. Is there a way to attach file or should I email it

If it just got published in the Google Play store, I think it takes a few hours to show up. Paste the link here so we can check it out when it becomes available! Mark

https://play.google.com/store/search?q=bacteria+shield Mark I know its not up to the standards of this group but I am so proud of the kids. In the competition they had to invent or improve upon an invention to stop the bacteria or spoilage of a specific food They researched, interviewed and polled people and determined the biggest problem is lack of knowledge. They made this app with help from you guys ( the invention to give people information in a quick and accessible way) They wrote a little skit for presentation The competition is Saturday Ill let you know My son my want to make more apps but me I am done at least for a little while Thank you again you guys rock and thank you buzztouch

Hey Overworkedmom, Don't sell you and your kids too short! From what I can tell, it's pretty darn cool, and you all should be proud of it! It looks on par with many of the apps I've seen come out of these forums! Congratulations, and let us know how it goes in the competition. If your son needs some help making apps, let us in the forums know...we'd be happy to help out! Mark
