BTv1.5 - Admob for Android - 5 minute install

This guide is for apps with NO modifications done to them. Other SDK's, code modification etc may, or may not, have an adverse effect. Download cheat sheet: http://minus.com/mPtyBtlem# Watch Video: http://www.putlocker.com/file/6936E57EFFDCC95B# OR http://www.novamov.com/video/h4qkxmchea8ai (still being processed at time of writing) Copy. Should be fairly self-explanatory, but post here if you have any problems. Attention! If you don't like Drum n' Bass turn your sound down!

Oh my god, worked like a charm. You have no idea how happy this camper is. This worked on the very first shot! Not bad for a watermelon head. What kind of beer do you like. Thank you so much.

Do have one issue. When using the back button, the ads add to the main screen. When app is open it has one I visit a menu item hit the back button it adds one to the page I was just on, now have two. Do it again now have three..... etc. Reopen the app it starts at one again.

That's weird. Have you put the last line of code in the cheat sheet in the onDestroy activity? I'm not seeing that, but I haven't done much testing.

Ok got this to work. Had to change it from the onResume to onCreate code is below. Look at bottom of code. @raveyd I want to thank you again for this! Fred this is a keeper! LOL fishing talk //onCreate @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState){ super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); //remember this activity... thisActivity = this; //create handler reportToCloudWorkerThread... reportToCloudHandler = new Handler(); //create handler to configure backgrounds... backgroundImageWorkerHandler = new Handler(); /* * set the screenData for this screen BEFORE setting the content view... * If this Activity was started with passed-in payload then we started it from * BT_activity_root when a tab was created. In this we use that tabs * home-screen data and not the rootApp.currentScreenData. This is because the * rootApp.currentScreenData property has not been set yet. */ Intent startedFromIntent = getIntent(); int tabIndex = startedFromIntent.getIntExtra("tabIndex", -1); if(tabIndex > -1){ //get this tabs home-screen data if(tabIndex == 0) this.screenData = timmyhortonprobassangler_appDelegate.rootApp.getTab0ScreenData(); if(tabIndex == 1) this.screenData = timmyhortonprobassangler_appDelegate.rootApp.getTab1ScreenData(); if(tabIndex == 2) this.screenData = timmyhortonprobassangler_appDelegate.rootApp.getTab2ScreenData(); if(tabIndex == 3) this.screenData = timmyhortonprobassangler_appDelegate.rootApp.getTab3ScreenData(); if(tabIndex == 4) this.screenData = timmyhortonprobassangler_appDelegate.rootApp.getTab4ScreenData(); }else{ //set the screen data.. this.screenData = timmyhortonprobassangler_appDelegate.rootApp.getCurrentScreenData(); //because we are not in the root of a tab we can adjust the status bar dynamically... requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE); String statusBarStyle = BT_strings.getStyleValueForScreen(this.screenData, "statusBarStyle", ""); if(statusBarStyle.equalsIgnoreCase("hidden")){ getWindow().setFlags(WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN, WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN); }else{ getWindow().addFlags(WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FORCE_NOT_FULLSCREEN); } } //content view for "base" activity is emtpy (it must be set before sub-classes can set another content view) setContentView(R.layout.act_base); adView = new AdView(this, AdSize.BANNER, Config.ADMOB_PUBLISHER_ID); // Lookup LinearLayout LinearLayout layout = (LinearLayout)findViewById(R.id.admob_main); // Add the adView to it layout.addView(adView); // Initiate a generic request to load it with an ad adView.loadAd(new AdRequest()); }

Do you have a list view as the home screen? Bet you don't. I did it like I did it to allow a list view to load up before doing anything else, otherwise the activity throws a NullpointerException and force closes the app. I guess if you don't have a list view on start up, then putting the code in onCreate should be fine. The strange thing is, I've got a list view as the home screen and what I coded works fine. Weird. Glad it works ok for you anyway. Leadbolt install guide next, when I've got a bit of time.

It's a bit different for 1.4. There are some good guides on here for v1.4, use Freds search engine to search for 'admob'. The url for Fred's search engine escapes me, but it should be easy enough to find.

Hi Raveyd, First off, thanks for the videos and cheat sheets - awesome! I have followed your video and added the code from the cheat sheet twice now to make sure I hadn't done anything wrong, but I'm still getting an error: Description Resource Path Location Type The public type Config must be defined in its own file config.java /buzzTouch/src/com/ieltswritingandroid line 3 Java Problem Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Cheers Patrick

Hi Raveyd, Oops! Simple fix for that :) Nonetheless, I've decided some 12 hours after fiddling around that this is beyond me... Can't get rid of over 100 errors that have popped up 'cause of changing to Android 3.2 (I complied the project in 2.2 without the ads). Winners never quit, quitters never win - and idiots don't quit and don't win :) Thanks anyway, Patrick

Hi BigFish - thanks a million for the speedy response. I don't want to give up, but I think I might be trying to run before I can walk... In Raveyd's video, the Platform seemed to be 3.2 with API level 13 so that's what I downloaded. That's giving 102 errors. The Geopoint one I can understand as I haven't downloaded the maps API, but then I'm getting other errors (import com.google.android cannot be resolved etc). All of these problems disappear when I select platform 4.0.3 / API 15, but then my Android phone isn't recognised and the emulator crashes... I have looked at a fair bit of documentation but don't really know where to focus for a result :(

Hi BFT, OK, I think I might be getting closer to the root of the problem - Raveyd's vieo and your post reference 3.2 13, which I have - except that on Raveyd's video it's the Google API version, where I only the Android version. I opened the SDK Manager but there doesn't seems to be an option for Google 3.2 API - I have Google 2.2 8 API and 4.0.3 15 (the errors disappear using 4.0.3 15 but then crashes the emulator...). I have the MD5 fingerprints installed for the maps. Cheers P

Absolutely, you need the Google API. I have never used the Android APIs In the SDK you should be able to download Android 3.2 (API 13) under that you will see Google APIs by Google 13 thats what you need just download all 4 of them the SDK etc..... you don't want to use anything else. You know this sounds ridiculous but always clean your project and close and open it, fast stupid way I found to rid errors. I have a couple droids so I never use the emulators unless needed.

Hmmm.. this is where it gets odd again. I can't see that in the list of possibilities to download. I've take a screenshot of what's available and can't see any option for Google 3.2 (it is under 4.0.3 though). http://www.ieltstestonline.com/API.png As for the cleaning - not ridiculous at all (the time it took me to work that out might qualify though..!)

Gotta love eclipse! It's funny how we all follow the documentation and all end up with different configurations! Must be Apple vs Windows installation differences. Perhaps a specific google or stackoverflow search will bring up some help? @IELTStestONLINE - are you using a google map in your project? If not, it's a lot easier to just delete the offending code.

Hi raceyd, it seems that my ISP is blocking Novamov website. I used a proxy, the video is still there but sadly i cannot download that video since my proxy disables javascript support on my browsers. Tried many times but seems that i'm totally lost on this one.

Right click and paste? Have you tried in Eclipse Have you tried, right click on your project >> Android Tools >> Fix Project Properties Then go to top menu Project >> Clean Then I usually close Eclipse and reopen it and that will take care of a lot of these issues.

ok i checked my properties and made a mistake, it was on android 3.2 instead of google 3.2, now there is no errors, it launches, but the ads are out of wack, not only does a new ad come everytime i go to the main menu of my app, theres 2 ads at the top instead of 1 also when i go back to 2.2 which my project is supposed to be, it comes with 100 errors do you think it has something to do with buzztouch? cause on buzztouch control panel for each menu i put "yes i want advertisements on this page"

Hello friends, i wanted to ask you guys about the size of this video. If the size of tutorial video is well not that big can any one share that video with me either on dropbox or on youtube? I tried to visit the aforementioned sites by sadly it is getting blocked by my ISP. I would be really thankful if you guys share this video with me.

@ceerup - are you sure you've got the latest admob sdk and set the correct api level? The first error in your post is usually caused by selecting the wrong api level or using an old sdk. 'Going back to 2.2' won't work, the admob sdk needs a minimum level of 3.2! If you're getting ads stacked on top of each other, see @Bigfishtools posts near the top of the thread. The subsequent errors, if they're anything to do with admob, should be resolved when you fix the first one. @Sandeep - I'm sorry you've got these problems. My fault, I should have kept video backups. You don't really need the videos, the cheat sheet identifies where the code should go.

@ceerup - 2.2 is the MINIMUM build level as specified in your manifest. Setting a higher build level won't have any bad effect because you're not changing the build level in your manifest. You will be able to update your existing app in the marketplace. Presumably you've had an internet connection when running the app in your emulator and you've seen admob ads? That's why Admob says it's receiving ad requests.

You've got it! Regarding the build level, in your manifest right at the top it says something like: min sdk <8> - That basically means you can set your build level to 2.2 (api level 8) or higher. Setting it lower will probably cause problems, but not higher.

@Bigfishtools, nice one mate! This is why I don't like doing tutorials. A detail missed or ignored, or a different project configuration, or a different eclipse setup, and the result is a long thread like this!

Hello raveyd, the video is really short and up to the point. I implemented all the steps in your video. At first i got an error regarding import file i.e. import com.v15admobapp.Config; which i figured out i had to put the name of my app and the error was soon removed. Eclipse now shows no errors in my app. Then I tested my app on my device but the app force closes each time i make it to run on my Galaxy S. This was yesterday night, I will start freshly today again and tell you if i succeed. Thank you again for your video.

@raveyd i'm not misleading any one. I already mentioned that I Don't know what i'm missing. There is surely some error i cant figure even after trying many times. Bigfish offered me help earlier and he too could not figure out what was wrong with my files. I would appreciate if you take look at my project and tell me what i'm missing.

@raveyd, he sent it to me could not get it done, he says it is version 1.5 but throws one error saying it is not. He was to send another copy the other day, but never heard from him. It works awesome added it to another app this weekend! Just have to add it to oncreate instead of onresume. Thanks for the info.

@Sandeep. This isn't an issue with admob integration. Your app force closes even before any admob code is added. Unfortunately, it force closes before logcat outputs any data so I have no idea why. (It also force closes on my phone before it even opens up the first screen).

@raveyd and @Bigfish Know what guys, at last i managed to set admob on one of my app just now. I tested it on emulator it starts now without forceclose issue and the ads are now showing up. I figured what i was missing. I had to go to Project Properties > Java Build Path > Order and Export and had to check the little box next to my admob.jar. Thanks for both of you for assisting and offering your valuable help. It means a lot to me. Cheers!
